Been having an issue with the thermostat. While driving at cruise it will steadily increase until I don’t feel comfortable and will downshift and lift. During deceleration it will plummet 10-15 degrees, then as I resume it will slowly increase again. It’s the 160 thermostat, I’ve done probably 20 drive cycles to remove air over the last 2 weeks. Lower hose does not get as hot as the upper, warm though not hot. I can hold the lower and squeeze the upper and feel flow. I just replaced the thermostat now and it seems better, but still increases temperature in cruise. I think it should be way under where it is in the picture. I have pressure tested the system and it holds 21psi and didn’t drop over 30 minutes. I did test in a pan of boiling water and the new thermostat opens. Also if I’m idling and do a couple quick revs it will drop 10 degrees as well. Am I crazy?

What he said. The supplied motorad 160 is junk. A reisch 170 ran literally about 30 deg cooler in my car. It might start opening at 160 but it doesnt fully open until about 210. The reisch starts at 170 and is fully open between 180 and 185.

Hmm. I can understand that. I just measured with an infrared thermometer while the ect was around 195. Upper hose is about 165 and the lower hose is around 95.

I did get a Murray thermostat from work and it is another motorad 😒

I've done every possible test I can think of, even threw vacuum at the cooling system thinking I have a massive air bubble behind the thermostat, no changes. I will order the Reisch and give it a try.

I’ve also had the issue of an air bubble being caught in the water pump. Simply unbolting the overflow tank and raising it up will allow air to escape. Might try that as well since it’s quick and free.

You will be going backwards with any of the 160 thermostats.

imo you keep the ford 180 or go to a Reische 170 is the goto for boost.

Do not buy a none Reische 170, or it will be worse then the stock ford 180.

I have heard of people taking the stock thermostat and drilling it out so that it still flows while closed. Maybe try that as well

I also have a Reisch 170 and I love it. With that said, do you think 199 ECT is hot? The default Whipple tune targets 212 ECT for the fan control, so anything under that is totally normal.

If I'm sitting at idle with the ac off no, I know it's going to warm up until the fans kick in. But with the ac on or cruising with flow through the radiator? It's hotter than the factory thermostat.

Yup, thanks guys. Without ac on or heat, ect went up to 185 then the thermostat opened, dropped to 175 and was rising which is normal. Turned on ac so the fans would come on, dropped to 175 and was very stable. Win! 😁
