I can't tell any difference in 93 from 91 or 89 as in Texas we have 89 octane available not 91. So I mix 89 and 93 to get 91 w/techron additive. Strange days indeed!

I'm running E85 in my 3V and E30 in the SHO. I'd go E85 with the SHO but would need the $2k HPFP and VE table for my 4 lobe setup.

I plan to tune the S550 or GT350 (whichever I decide) to run on E85 or a blend depending on the stock fuel capacity. I have to run my stock 3V injectors at 60 psi to handle the fuel demands. There is a hit in fuel economy, about 2 to 3 mpg, but cost benefit analysis shows with a $1 price delta per gallon between e85 and 93, I save money with E85 and it's effective octane is 105 with MPFI and much higher with direct injection. They also say E85 shines in NA engines with hIgher compression.

The spark data difference between 93 octane and E30 for my SHO was night and day, made me wonder why I never tried E85 ten years ago. It also smells nice from the pump and out the exhaust during a cold start. E85 just needs to be run richer during cold start cranks to avoid issues in the winter.

I save $475/year by running 87 octane over premium. That's with 18k-20k mile/year driven.

In the end, what's it worth to you.

By running 93 octane, you'll be gaining 4-10hp but losing $$$ out of your wallet. I can't for the life of me figure out why some would pay the $300-$500 per year for such a minuscule HP increase (you cannot feel it on the street), but to each their own.

A few more points I'd like to make. The car will not run any better worse on 87, 91 or 93 octane. It will not run any better on Ethanol free fuel. Ethanol free on it's own is worth a paltry 3% savings in fuel economy, yet it is typically far more expensive than fuel with 10% ethanol.

To the OP, run whatever fuel your wallet is comfortable with, just make sure it is a Top Tier branded fuel. 87 octane Top Tier will be far better for your engine than 93 octane Non Top Tier.

I notice an improvement in gas mileage when using 93 vs 87 in my 4Runner. Average with 93 is 18.7mpg. Average with 87 is 16.5mpg. I'd say it's about even on how much money each will cost you overall. I personally enjoy not having to stop as much for gas as well as the added bit of power.

You lose about 10 - 20 HP and torque at peak with going to 87 but you won't put the engine in jeopardy by any means.
Nada, I'll have to find the links, but it's 10HP MAX.

The 4Runner is not a mustang. Myself and many others have tested this out on the coyote and noticed 0 mpg difference. Hell, some noticed a MPG increase with 87 octane.

As for this power difference, drive with 1/4 tank and a full tank. That is the equivalent of the power you may be losing on 87 octane. It's not worth it to me.

Wow so am I the only guy on the forum who fills up exclusively at the local drag strip? 100 octane or no octane boys.

Who the hell cares if it's 18 bucks a gallon

Probably doesn't make a difference in the n/a motors, but I can feel the difference in my boosted motor.

I work at a major east cost refinery. The gasoline itself is exactly the same between distributors. And we supply all major brands with gasoline. (Shell, BP, Valero, etc.) All gas stations in a region will receive gasoline from the local refineries in the area reguardless of brand. It's not like shell owns a refinery and they only make gas for shell stations. The only difference between the big players and the mom and pop gas stations is the additives the major brands are willing to use in their gasoline.
My late father was a pipe fitter at the Esso/Exxon refinery in Linden from the late 40's 'til 1982. I seem to recall that back then, Esso was exclusive and distributed only to Standard Oil dealers. That's my recollection. I know the business has changed since.

Is it true CA 87 gas is really bad? People here say it's garbage and it'll cause knocking more so than 87 gas from other states. I always put in 91 since I got my car but this week I put in 87. I actually noticed a difference. Throttle response suffered a bit and overall it didn't pull as hard from 4000 and up.

I'm in Reno and pretty sure we get the same gas as CA. Highest octane available is 91, and it knocks like a SOB, didn't find this out till I installed a supercharger that came with a logger so I could see it happening.
