I hope this is an a ridiculous question. Just wondering what you guys use when working on your car at home to get it off the ground and to keep it stable while your under it. Obviously a jack but do you use jack stands and if you do where do you place them. I am not a mechanic by any means but want to install my axle back exhaust this weekend. I have ramps but this car is so low not really sure they will work.
Again I hope this is not a ridiculous question.

I can't tell you where to jack it up (the manual does), but use jacks and jack stands. As many as you have. Borrow more if you don't have enough. Chock the wheels that are on the ground. Take every precaution to make sure that bitch doesn't drop on you.

Take it from someone that narrowly avoided death once.

Never ever, ever, ever work under a car supported only by a jack, ever!
If a car is on a jack expect it to fall just as you treat any gun as loaded, it ca hurt you just as badly!
Use jack stands, ramps, stacked 6"x6" blocks, concrete blocks, something in addition to the jack.

There are arrows under the sideskirts that show you where to place the jacks. Ive had the car up dozens of time supported from those locations with no issues.

Here's where I jack from. You can lift the whole side from this point. Keep the jack towards the front tire and it will leave you room to get the front stands in.

As others have said, never...EVER work under your car on a jack alone. Ramps, stands, blocks, whatever you can use. Always assume the jack will fail/get knocked out/twisted the wrong way, etc. Always chock any wheels on the ground so that it doesn't roll. You really don't want that car to fall on you. Even if you are just changing a tire, if you have the ability to use a jack-stand, use it.

Just make sure the stand will fit/support your car.

Most of us have installed jacking rails from Steeda or BMR. This helps with jacking your car. I have a cheap scissors jack for now, but will be getting something better. Harbor Freight had a recent recall on their jack stands, but obtain yourself a pair or two with at least a 2 ton rating. As a secondary safety measure, if I have to remove my tires, I slide them under my car some, near my stands.

If wheels are staying on - jack stands with blocks under the wheels, I have seen jack stands shift before, always always always have a redundant safety like blocks under the wheels.
If the wheels have to come off, leave the floor jack under one of the jack points on the side you're working on, etc.
Hey, everybody started somewhere - read up, ask questions, watch videos, and you'll be a DIY'er in no time.

Jack stands plus the jack, for me. I'll jack it up, slide the jack stand under, lower it onto the jack stand but then also keep the jack in place. Just something extra to catch if something bad were to happen. Having a car wobble, because you're trying to bust a bolt loose, while you're under it is absolutely terrifying. Also, don't use jack stands on an incline.

My neighbor had his mini van up 4 jack stands on his driveway. The incline is pretty steep. Fortunately nothing happened but I got anxious just seeing it.

I also will position a ramp under the wheels, so if EVERYTHING fails, it still falls onto an elevated support. That's only if I'm not using these guys:

Those look heavy, bulky and awkward but I bet they'd support two or three Mustangs!

You can put jack stands near the reinforced jacking points on the pinch weld, or inboard on the control arm mounts in the front or rear as the diagram shows. I wouldn't use those body reinforcements personally, but it would probably be fine.

Bought the rails, installed same. Could not get around the idea of jacking a car from the side. As a practical and stable lift and lower.

The crib deal is sturdy, however lacks the option of being able to remove the wheels.

Think brakes & tire rotation, second to oil & filter changes. Being one of the two most common DIY maintenance preformed.

If you have the $$$$ the quick jack is highly recommended, for the Mustang.

Have floor jacks & jack stands fo the other cars.
