Dear friends,

firstly I am European guy interested to buy used GT350 y2016 with approximately 10 000miles.
I read and saw a few videos about issues with the engine, cooler and oil consumption.

Please, if I have VIN number of the car, is there any way to check if the engine in the car I am interested to buy was the wrong one?

Also, what do you think, is the car so problematic? Or what I should consider before buying used one?

Many thanks for your advice and help.

Sincerely Tomas

Hey Tomas. Most GT350s have been trouble free. There are relatively rare instances of the engine failing due to unknown reasons. This is often first associated with increased oil consumption. There is no way of really knowing the "health" of the engine in the car you wish to buy. There is no VIN or part number that has been linked to any of the random failures. If the engine has already been replaced then this should show up in a vehicle history readout. Your importer should be able to get you a Carfax report which will contain the accident and service history of the vehicle.

If you are importing to Slovakia then you will not have any factory warranty. But this is the case for all imported North American vehicles. Out of pocket costs for an engine replacement are north of $25,000 USD in the US.

If my assumption is incorrect and you are not importing to Europe but buying and keeping it in the USA/Canada then you should still have some balance of the 5 year powertrain warranty left.

Hey Tomas,

Running the VIN through any type of VIN reporting agency will not reveal if the vehicle has had an engine problem (or replacement). The VIN will tell the type of engine for that platform.

Replacement engines (GT350 or not) will never have a VIN, or say the original VIN of the vehicle that is being repaired or to which the engine will be placed into. So if the engine was replaced, that is a tell tale sign to look for when looking over the vehicle in person.

I can’t find it currently, but there is a thread on here showing folks the Ford decal that is on the replacement engines (which are 2019’s) being used for GT350 warranty repair efforts. That decal is coded to confirm if the engine is the 2019 replacement engine. Maybe another M6G member can post a link to that thread.

If you know someone who has a Ford connection (works at a Dealership), they can run any VIN through the Ford OASIS system. That system will have any repair history (warranty and non-warranty) as long as the vehicle was serviced at ANY Ford Service Center.

If you know someone who has access to Ford ETIS, you can also have them run the VIN through that system as well.

If the vehicle had a major repair such as say an engine replacement, that would be in OASIS on the repair order - and the Dealership can pull that repair to see exactly what was repaired and when.

Also to note - if you do find a GT350 that you’re interested in, DEFINITELY run the VIN through OASIS to make sure the vehicle was not a Ford Buy Back. If the vehicle was, the selling Dealer HAS to make it known in all advertisement of that vehicle that it was a Buy Back. The title will be branded a Lemon and the vehicle will also have a Ford RAV decal placed on the driver side B-pillar below the original Ford VCL decal (so it can be immediately seen when the driver door is open).

If you come across a deal that seems too good to be true (especially for a GT350), do your due diligence by researching the car thoroughly or asking the knowledgeable folks on here to help. There’s scammers out there always looking to make a buck, just be aware.

Do you plan on tracking the car? Keep in mind for 2016 only the track pack car has all the coolers, magnetic dampers, etc. Do your homework on the 2016's, as you could not order a car with the tech pack and track pack that year. Starting in 2017 the track pack became standard on all GT350's.

2016's were solid. The only problem is you don't know how the car was driven for those 10K miles. A person who bought one of my roll cages got himself a 2016R with 2K miles...…

Anyway, best of luck in your decision.

Oh, yes, good advice above overall. Avoid the tech pack is probably the best advice.

I liked my tech pack car and I added the transmission cooler. It was a solid car and no oil consumption.

Wish wife would have kept it for her daily.

Oh well, she is still for sale in GA.

If interested, ask for Ron, tell him Jim D referred you!!

Like I said, 16's are solid. But the whole retrofit for coolers and pump, etc. Not to open the can of worms, but ford should have put those coolers in from the beginning.

Guys,

Many thanks for help and answers to everybody!

Actually yes car is already in EU, coming originally from Canada and I would like to register it in Slovak Republic. I have no friends or contacts in Ford, but already asked Ford through facebook ( I have no other contact for it) with the VIN number if they can check the Ford Buy Back history/database.

Car is 2016 but is equipped with MagneRide and Active Exh. Control, which is very important for me.
Other short request from me, this is VIN “1FA_6P8JZ_5G5524_961” -> please remove “_” , I am preventing google search system. If you can double check for me that OASIS system, and Ford Buy Back has no issue wiht this car, if you have time and friends there of course.

Many many thanks again, if somebody will travel to Slovakia, contact me, I owe you a beer and excursion :like:

Items in the OASIS report are a fuel rail pressure sensor and broken wire in the fuse box. This vehicle had the recall for the oil system done (all 16's had this recall).

The fuel rail pressure sensor required the fuel rails to be removed and for some reason the valve covers as well. I'm not sure of the fuel rail pressure sensor repair procedure.

It also had a failure to crank/start issue twice. It was fixed the second time around.

Many thanks help, You can not imagine how this can help for me.

So what I understand there was no serious things and no engine problem, no ford buy back.

What do you think about it?

What type beer do you like? :-)
