Some are not comfortable removing body panels, cutting/drilling, etc...

Maybe it's different on the Mustang, but in the past I had more trouble getting to the back speakers than the front. BUT.... if you don't mess with the front speakers, you're wasting your time, IMO. I haven't even heard the system yet but I know the speakers have a whizzer cone for a tweeter. Just horrible.

I'd like to change only the rears for some speakers that would be made for bass only but nobody makes anything like that. Subs put in the rear deck would work but they are going to need an amp as they just take more power than the radio alone will put out. Nobody makes a sub that size either.

I mounted two 10" low profile subs under the rear deck.

What you're looking for is mid-bass woofers and tons of companies make them...

Nobody makes 6.5 sub-woofers???!?!?!?!?! JL and a couple other companies would disagree with statement.

You know, I wonder how well that would work.... My Acura has a low power 10" sub mounted free air in the rear deck and it sounds simply awesome. Not super loud but plays super low and very accurate. This would eliminate the need for a box in an already small trunk.

Sound and it's distribution can be subject to personal preference. I prefer a more balanced sound from front to back. Front speakers were ok, backs were practically non existent. So I replaced the rears. For $60 bucks and an hour of my time the entire system is improved. Well worth the money and minimal time invested.
Having said that, there still is not enough bass.

I am going to try these. I don't need the super low bass you kids want just a little bass drum from John Bohnam would do me fine.

I've considered it as well, simply so I'm not using trunk space for a boxed sub like I am now. I'd still amp them though since I like to listen to my metal LOUD.

I can add an amp if it is needed but I'll try it without first. I don't listen that loud just loud enough to be heard over the exhaust with the windows up. Windows down I listen to the car.

I know little to nothing about car audio, but can you just replace the stock door and A-pillar speakers with a component set, but not use the crossovers that come with the components? I'm thinking that since I'm assuming that each of those speakers is only being fed a certain signal anyways?

I'm pretty sure the tweeter and mid bass on the base system are run in parallel with each receiving the full signal. If you're going to add a component set, I'd suggest using the crossover.
