Brief backstory ... I wound up buying my Shelby out of state because it was the only option I had at the time in terms of getting exactly what I wanted at a price I was willing to pay. Knowing I was going to be trading in my truck for the car, I figured I would just pay to ship both ways (trade vehicle out, Shelby back).

Fast forward to today ...

After much internal debate and back-and-forth with myself, I have decided to drive my truck out and drive the car back. Three reasons ... First, I would like to be there for delivery and to inspect everything myself, second, I have read enough horror stories about damage or issues during shipping that it has me a bit spooked, and, finally, what better way to experience the new car than driving it home on the interstate for 8 hours.

One of the first appointments I have made is for the car to get wrapped and coated, but, obviously, this is going to happen after 550+ miles of interstate driving. My detailer suggested that I use some painters tape (poor man's option) to cover up the areas prone to rock damage / road debris, or look into getting some of the Xpel temporary wrap (or something similar). He said it was going to look goofy either way, but a small price to pay for minimizing any paint chips or damage before getting wrapped.

For those that were in the same situation (or those that take preventive measures on your track days), which would you recommend?

Furthermore, are there any non-obvious areas I want to make sure to protect?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I believe this is the stuff I have a roll of.

Not pretty but would serve a temporary purpose. Kind of handy to have around. Last use I had for it was to cover the top of my laptop lid before I took it in for repair. Seems most those electronic places (Geek Squad is the worse) like to just throw and stack the stuff around in the back room scuffing/scratching the hell out of it.

A lot of us use Trakktape.

As far as "non-obvious" areas, just make sure you tape the area above the windshield, the impact areas in front of the rear wheels, and the rocker panels.

Installation tip: DON'T try to pull this stuff tight. Just let it lay flat on the surface, and squeegee the air bubbles out. Also, work from the back of the hood to the front, so there are no exposed edges to catch air. Any exposed edges WILL lift up after a relatively short period of time.

Just can't get enuff!
Yup.... and you do not have to be an artist. :D

Make sure you have the edges stuck on well.... prevents lifting.

So that's what the beautiful Ford GT at a Cars & Coffee had all over it and looked like a terrible PPF job.

There have been a few times that guys have driven from Tampa area to WPB area and they used a lot of painters tape to protect their front ends and some of the area behind each tire. Could be another option for you.

I picked my car up new on a Tuesday (forgot the mileage, but it was new/low), ripped the shit out of it for another 80 miles that day, then left the next morning on a 700+ mile road trip. Accidents happen, I get it, but I made that trip with zero damage, much less anything I would hesitate to wrap/film over.

I would use trakk tape. I've used both and road wrap lifts off way too easy. Much thinner too

I used painters tape when bringing my R home. I got caught in the rain and portions started to lift off. It end up being fine once I got home, but there sure sounds like better options out there. Minor blemishes will hide once PPF is installed.

Just use blue painters tape.
I've done that too. It sticks better than road wrap.

I'll catch you guys later, off to Vancouver for the night.

Eh?
