You carefully spread them with a pry bar or screwdriver

I must be missing something.....
How are you guys changing pads without removing the caliper? You have to compress the pistons since the new pad will be thicker. I've always removed the caliper and used this to compress the pistons

Yeah I just use a couple of small C clamps to pull the front pads back (near where the friction pins go through). Definitely don't fuss with removing the caliper, and I don't have to pry against the friction material. The brembo caliper finish is pretty tough, so doesn't even mark that with the steel C clamps.

Use your fingers on the old pads and compress the pistons with the pad.

It's a lot easier if you open the bleeder screw.

Open bleeder, put a hose on it make sure you have it vertical for 5 or 6 inches, then loop it down into a catch can.

Take screw driver and wedge it between the rotor and the pad ear next to the pin. You can use a flat plastic trim tool if you are worried about marring your rotor or friction material. After you get it moving the rest is easy. Once the pistons are fully seated, close the bleeder.

This is a bit tricky because you don't want to remove the hose until the bleeder is tight. This prevents air from getting into the caliper. Do the other side, top off master.

I change rotors between street and track set as well. That's why I have to take the calipers off.....forgot that little part
