About to do my very swap back TO 93 away from 85. Wow, what an experience. I wish 85 was sooo much more readily available. Just incredible how the car runs on 85.

Only goofy question I have is this - I’m guessing swapping back TO 93 isn’t quite as critical as going to 85 when it comes to getting the gas tank as low as possible?? Totally just a guess on my part.

(When I went to 85, I ran the last tank of 93 all the way down to literally 0 miles left on the counter.)

Anything else to consider? Tips/tricks?

Get some hose, remove reid valve on fuel rail, hook hose to it, put hose in 5 gallon gas can, jump fuel relay so pump runs, fill 5 gallon jug. once your empty, put reid valve back, fill cars tank with whatever you want.

The tank still has about 2.5 gallons in reserve if I remember correctly when it says zero miles. Unless you've modified the fuel gauge to be accurate.

Drives me insane Ford can't just tell us what the fuel level is. In my truck, It's 4 gallons in reserve.

Whenever I switch I just ran it until I was in the low teens or high single digits., then just took it easy for the first tank. No issues here.

This is just a minor advantage, but take a gas can and pump a half gallon into that before filling up to get the 87 out of the hose.

I used to do that for the mower

But really you just end up with 92.8 octane instead of 93 if you pump 15 gallons

I do it at 50 miles til empty. The octane in E85 is higher than 93.

Key for flashing back is to not do it at the pump. Bring down the tank to zero. Fill up on 93, then go driving for 5-10 miles. Then pull over and flash back to 93 tune. That will allow time for the E85 to make its way through the fuel systems, and the 93 to get to the injectors. Its not instant. So dont flash back until you have ran the car for a while on 93. And again a while means like 5 miles of driving.

Interesting. I have never seen this tool before. Makes sense tho.

I checked on that. Most modern pumps have around .2 gallon in the mechanism and hose from the previous use.

These things aren’t that sensitive to variations in exact ethanol %. You can usually get away with e30 on a gasoline tune but potentially as high as 60%. So even if you don’t have it totally purged it likely won’t hurt a thing.

I don’t know for sure how much is left in the tank at 0 miles but based on the refills it takes to actually purge all the old fuel I had assumed 1-2 gallons. You’d be surprised how long residual old fuel hangs out. Even if you run the e85 down to 0 miles you still wind up with e20 in the first tank of 93.

But even in your scenario, let’s say the e20, that’s not necessarily a bad thing on the 93 tune due to the octane???

Why would it be? You would have a higher octane rating than the 93
