I am planning a trip with a local car group to the corvette museum and then the trail of the dragon in July this year. My normal tires are the continental DWS06+. They’re great tires, but not the best for summer performance. I tried the atturo az850s last year. Reviews seemed positive for cheap tires. I didn’t like them. I have a few mods (roughly 450 wheel) and they still spin at 70. My plan was to just keep them this year for the fronts only and get new rears. Is my logic flawed in using them for fronts or do I need to replace all 4 in that case? I’m not going to run the track super hard, but I do need to use tires I can trust. The atturos are going to be a disaster on the tail I expect. Welcome to advice for which tires for summer only and if rears only would be acceptable.

No dont do rears only do all four. Mismatching tires leads to unpredictable handling as different tire makes and models will react to heat, rain, cold, and road conditions differently.

The front tires are arguably more important than the rears since they do the majority of braking and turning and the majority of the vehicle weight rests on them, but the advice is always to replace all 4 at the same time and at a minimum keep them the same brand/model.

something like the MP4S or Continental ECS02 are good choices for summer tires which can do everything pretty well. Not too much noise, dont tramline bad, great if you get caught in a storm, good for the twisties, can hold up to a moderate effort track day, solid braking and acceleration grip. They arent as good as it can get if you know the weather is warm and the roads will be clear and dry, but they’re a solid bet for most conditions and drivers.

I agree, I would not mismatch tires. PS4S or ECS 02 for sure, best summer tires you can get. Either one are comparable, the ECS 02 are tad bit cheaper.

On a side note, I have several friends (like 5 or 6) that run the Atturo's here in East TN where the Dragon is, most are boosted and they love them. I don't have the nerve to put such cheap tires on my car personally...

I read a lot of reviews before I bought them, I was in the same boat. The set of 4 cost me like $525. My car is not that quick, it’s roughly 450 wheel. Idk how anyone with serious power finds them worthwhile. I already have them, so it would be cheaper to keep them for this run. But I also have no intention of ending up in a ditch. Maybe my psi was too high? I run a 285/35/19 at 33psi.

Yeah, if its nice and warm, I would drop down to about 29 cold pressure. Can't be any worse than the Nitto 555 G2's I had. Those tires were absolutely worthless... Stock power, I could spin them at will, and they were downright dangerous if it was wet... I ran 275 front and 305 rear on my 22 GT 10 speed. PS4S now, and they are like glue.

Funny you mention them, I had them in my first Mustang and it was stock. Totally agree. Maybe I give them (Atturos) another shot. It’ll be July, so temperature won’t be an issue at all.

If you have room to store a second set of wheels, why not buy a set of takeoff wheels with summer tires on them? You can find them for the same price as four new tires alone.

Then you can put your DWS on for the cold months.

I have considered that as well. Currently, I keep the second set of tires on the wall, and I swap them every spring and winter. It’s a pain in the butt. The issue I have currently is my tires are 275/40 and 285/35. I’m waiting until I need new winters to get a smaller size. Also working on getting a second vehicle which negates the need for all of the above.
