The other day as I was walking out of work I hit the remote start as I was walking up to the car and proceeded to see a puff of smoke come out, to my surprise it was faintly blue and smelled like burnt oil. Now I have had a UPR catch can installed on the car since right after I took delivery, I changed the oil after the first 1000 miles and every 4500-5000 miles thereafter, I currently have just under 19,500 miles so its about time for the 5th oil change, I've periodically checked the oil and nothing seems suspicious so I'm not sure what could be causing it to smoke like that. I've been able to see it smoke a few times before after it sat for a week while I was out of town and didn't think too much about it figured cause it sat so long, but now that I can see it smoke almost every day I'm getting a little worried.

anyone else notice this or have oil consumption issues?

Oil leaks down valve guides and onto back side of valves.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Mine has done it when it sits for awhile but I don’t check for it.

Almost any vehicle I have ever had does this.

You could have something wrong.

The problem is there is just not a lot of places for oil to get into the combustion chamber and not be terrible.

Intake will always have oil in it from PCV even with a catch can. Ring or scoring problems could cause excessive crank case pressure but that would likely show up in oil consumption.

Like I said though almost any car I have has done this before. I consider it a non issue on my vehicles.

If it's leaking valve guide seals any oil that's going to get past the seal will probably do it after 8-10 hrs ... maybe even less time if really bad.

If you have someone rev the engine up and down say from idle to 3000 RPM when the engine is warm, and you watch the tail pipes can you see any smoke? If not, I wouldn't worry about it at this point.

Could it be catch can related?

Unless the catch can is full and it's actually letting the oil go back into the intake, no. If anything, catch can will prevent majority of the oil vapors from going into the intake, thus reducing smoke.

My bet is on the valve guides or seals. I wouldn't expect any modern car to have that problem unless something is well out of spec.

I'll have to try this when I get home from work today and report back

Since its still under warranty I would at least take it in and have it documented with Ford. Alot can happen between now and 5yr/60K miles if its blowing blue smoke. That is not normal.

negative on the warm rev smoke, catch can is empty and lines are clean so no oil is coming in that way

oh no it has, I should have clarified I just emptied it the other day, I check to make sure it wasn't full and went ahead to cleaned it out. usually between oil changes it will catch about 5-6oz of oil

Maybe the blue smoke you previously saw was associated with the catch can oil before it was emptied. Now that the catch can is empty are you seeing the same smoke at start-up?

How mamy miles did it take to get 5~6 oz in the catch can? Did you eyeball the oil volume or actually measure it? 5~6 oz is quite a bit of oil. My GT gets about 0.75 to 1 oz of oil in the catch can per 1000 miles driven.

eyeballed, thought the upr catch cans was 12oz capacity but I just looked it up and its only 8oz, catch can was under half way full so that only 3-4 oz that was about after 4800 miles, still the slight smoke on start ups

You could try adding a bottle or two of ceratec to the oil , it may tighten up any slightly loose clearances.
