I get a pretty slight "thump" or "thud" when re-engaging first gear after coming to a complete stop at an intersection sometimes.

It's a 2016 PP with about 35,000km on it. Is this a normal attribute of the car?

If not should I investigate the clutch? The rear end?

I would say the clutch is not fully releasing.

Engage 1st gear S U P E R slowly with the clutch fully depressed to the floor, and see if you hear it grind slightly.

Several threads and hundreds of posts about the same thing. It's normal.

It's common but it is not normal,
Sloppy drivetrain engineering.

I notice the same thing in my 2017...BUT if I do not pull it too far to the left before shifting into 1st it does not do it...move it slightly to the left and in and no thump

You'll alleviate it by pushing the clutch all the way in and waiting 2-a few seconds before moving the shifter to 1st. Remember all that stuff is still turning while in neutral and take a second for it to stop. If you mash the clutch in and jam it in first you'll get some noisy feedback for it.

Might help going into 2nd first then straight up to first. On older vehicles, 1st didn’t have syncros so there was grinding unless the gear train was stopped by going into the second, then first..
Google manual transmission operation videos and you will get an idea of how it all works and a better idea of why that thud is there..

It's the sudden stop of the rotating assembly inside the transmission.

While you sit in neutral with the clutch engaged, everything is rotating except the output shaft. When you disengage the clutch and shift to first, the synchronizer brings the input shaft and ALL of the gear meshes to the same rotational velocity as the output shaft... zero.

You can either wait a bit after disengaging the clutch or ignore it. The rollover friction on these transmissions seems pretty low which is good for a performance car. Low rolling friction means higher efficiency, but a little rougher around the edges.

No matter how long you wait to put it in gear, it will still thud. I always go into 4th or 3rd before I move into 1st and then take off, even when I do that it still thuds in 4th or 3rd most of the time. Like I said in a different thread, If I slowly, I mean barely move my wrist and move the shifter into lets say 3rd, it will thud. I am convinced these cars have shit clutches or Ford has not perfected the Hydraulic clutch set up causing the clutch to not perform as it should. I think the 2018s do not have this issue, so they may have finally figured it out.
