My brother sent me a link to this and it looks tempting. Anyone with input on the event?

This looks interesting, very interesting. I may have to have a talk with my wife about this. (she would be my navigator)

Not sure I would want to tow my M1 from OKC to Vegas, but I would definitely rent an ecoboost from Enterprise, buy the CDW, and friggin send it.

It's a bucket list item for me! Has been since hearing about it as a teenager.

I looked into this years ago and to me it doesn’t sound like a ton of fun, particularly for first-timers.

For example: as a first-timer, unless you have extensive documented racing experience or a racing license, you’re generally required to be in the Touring Division. This division has average speed classes of 95 to 110mph.

That means it’s not an all out max speed race. You must complete the course with a speed average as close to your speed class as possible.

Cool, but it’s not like you can go out and go as fast as you want and then go slow to bring your average down. Your division has a max and minimum ā€œtechā€ speed, Touring max is 124mph. You can’t exceed 124mph, if you do you’re DQ’d, and you can’t go below the minimum tech speed except for slowing for corners because, you guessed it, you’ll be DQ’d.

So why not enter the Unlimited Division and go as fast as you want? Because you likely won’t meet the minimum tech speed of 160mph. Also, as a first-timer, you can’t do unlimited anyway.

I’d carefully read the FAQ and rule book before committing to this. I understand they’re trying to put on a safe race on public roads, but in my opinion that severely limits what your experience will be as a first-time racer. The rules make it feel like a math class at 100mph rather than a race.

Maybe I’m completely wrong about it and it’s the best thing ever, but I don’t get those vibes from reading the rules and the FAQ.

You are correct, I actually talked to one of people that set it up. When I found out what class I would be in 95-110 mph class is how everyone starts that has never done this before. Also there is no spectators allowed, if you want to see the races you have to volunteer at one of the pit stops along the route.

Don’t get me wrong, being able to go out and legally drive 100mph+ for miles and miles is pretty fun. But don’t require me to constantly do one of those ā€œif two trains leave the station at the same time going different speedsā€¦ā€ math questions while I’m doing it so I don’t get DQ’d.

Well guys there are times when you have to pay your dues. Do the touring class on your 1st year. Then come back the 2nd year and they will review their notes on your overall performance and put you in the class that you and your car belong in. Think about it. Could you imagine all the hoops they must jump to get this event off the ground. So if you are willing to put in the time then great if not dont put the org. down for having rules that they had to put in place to get event like this approved. Just my 2 cents.

My hero.. he also did the Baja California one... It's a race car that smoked everyones Exotics and Porsches, etc.. They ended up changing all the rules after he kept embarassing them. The egos of the guys in the exotics caused some deaths and bad accidents.. So Rules came into the picture. They were needed.. Experience is needed to really push the limits.

guy i knew back in boise won his speed class once in a mustang gt that was HEAVILY modded. he sold it and bought an sti with a lot of electronics to track speed/time and blew an i/c hose 4 miles in-DNF in 2005. he was in a mid100mph class and if you break down, you sit until the road is clear.
my old neighbor in vegas behind me ran his c6 a few times and his c7 once but he's 80 so no more.

it's a fun race but as mentioned the first year you are basically limited to slower speeds. it's all about crossing the finish line in the exact time, not flat out speed and iirc you are dq'ed if you exceed a certain speed in each class other than unlimited.

iirc if you get a speeding ticket on the 318 prior to the race I believe you are dq'ed so no "practicing".

I've driven that highway more times than I'd admit. it's a pretty fun stretch but personally I'd rather do the dragon if it's a true "trip" one is after.

I’d rather put my car in a shipping container on a boat for a few months and then go spend a month on the unrestricted sections of autobahn in Germany.

Sorry, but no thanks.
