I know in my local market. The delta between a low milage 2020 GT, and a similar 2024/25 GT isn't very large. At least the gap isn't what I thought it would be.
There's a very good reason for that. The 2020 is the most tasteful Mustang ever made, while the 2024/25 looks like shit. So you'd expect them to depreciate differently. 🤓

Good thing I bought my car to drive it and not sell it. I bought it for $40,000 out the door off the showroom floor in 2018, probably have another $50,000 in it. And if I build up Predator 52 they'll be another $15,000 in it..
Maybe I should have just bought a GT500 LOL

I am questioning that list. How is there no Mercedes on that list? Or BMW? Or Audi?
Why would you expect them to hold their value? 🤔
The list doesn't just reflect what people are willing to pay for a car, but also how eagerly the first owner will sell it.

In a study of 5-year-old cars, the Audis, BMWs and Mercs are a bunch of dumb-looking, soulless appliances. Anyone who was excited about them 5 years ago, probably just gets excited for whatever is new and fashionable at the moment.

And as those prissy brands get older, their maintenance costs escalate faster than that of a Mustang, don't they?
Don't most owners trade them in by the time the warranty runs out?
That's a big difference from us Mustang owners who bought our cars to keep them, and would take a lot of convincing before we'd sell.

True. After warranty depending on the repair, the price some of those cars face is considerable. Even just for some typical milage maintenance.

Can a Jaguar even be repaired after warranty 🤔🤣 when you look at those online 90% of them are just slightly below warranty.

Car enthusiasts with fair mechanical knowledge tend to forget most people are not "car people"

I lke the depreciation - especially when someone else "pays" for it.

While I have purchased a few of my Mustangs new over the years, the ones I got used were just as much fun - and cheaper.

In any purchase category where deprecation over time is a reality, buying new can sometimes be overrated.

I believe we talked about my SVO before. I have 5 cars, 2 car garage, SVO goes offsite for the winter, MGB at another garage. Wife's car never goes inside. Can't get another car without getting rid of something!
buh-bye wife - now you have room for another car . . .

🤣

I can't think of a single Mercedes that I would call desirable. AMG brand is a joke.

Mostly the same for Audi, except the Rs5 is really sweet but the long term costs are insane and a big no thank you.

Whereas BMW makes a number of models I would be really really happy to own and feel OK with out of warranty. Virtually every M car is pretty sweet.

Have you ever ridden in an AMG 63 E class AWD? Or a AMG 63 CLS? They are very impressive right out of the box, but with a tune and down pipes they are stupid. For the money, that absolutely SHOULD be, and in my opinion they ARE.

The salesman that sold my 2023 Mach 1 to me just called. Said he had someone looking for a manual, eruption green Mach 1 and sent me the window sticker for 2026 Dark Horse similarly equipped to my Mach 1. Dark Horse would be over $10k more. Not sure there is $10k of "better" content in it to go to a new car, though the DH was black with bronze rims which looked sharp. Not sure what the offer would have been, but I am sure it would have been decent.

Is being fast all it takes to hold value after 5 years? Clearly not.

is being fast all it takes to make me want a car? In no way.

Are other factors like attractiveness, value, repairs, and driving dynamics impacting MB over BMW? I would say absolutely. MB vehicles on the whole are fat pigs with poor driving feedback/dynamics, no manual options, and interior styling that is pretty off putting (strip club design).

I’m generally not a Mercedes fan, but I’d take an AMG GT-R in a heartbeat

OK, we get it. You don't like Benz's. Can we get back to Mustang's now? 🫪
