I think the GT500 will be an EcoBoost, not only to keep in step with their current marketing thrust, but because it will be easier to get more power out of a smaller displacement V8 with turbos than with a supercharger. The only question here is packaging, and what it will take to shoe-horn the turbo(s) into the engine bay.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they introduce it as a '17 MY, since that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the GT500.
i hope it's a ecobboost V8 not a V6 that would fuck ford so hard
think about it

If there was an EcoBoost 5.0l or 5.2l, wouldn't that conflict with the 3.5l EcoBoost that's in the 2017 GT? I would imagine Ford would just use a version of the 3.5l for the GT500. Just like Ford used a supercharged 5.4l V8 for the 2005 GT and then later used that same motor for the 2007 GT500.
chill out with the ecoboost V6 in a GT500 that would be suicide
who would buy that no hard core ford buyer wants that

No that would not be ideal for a street car, and yes lag would be terrible. The only pro I can think of is that it places them closer to the openings in the bumper on the car that could be used as air inlets directly into the turbos. I guess I should not have said "same setup as the cobra jet". I more wanted to reference that they had been testing a twin turbo 5.0
it's 2015 not 1990 turbo lag is a thing of the past

If one wants to go as fast as possible in a straight line, a 10spd auto is going to be faster than any manual. The Hellcat twins can be had with an 8spd auto -- they are super fast for a 4300lb car, the demand has been so crazy FCA can't build them fast enough, and they are hardly like a GTR.

Not everybody wants to row their own gears. Manual only SE's have been a complaint about Mustangs since the Terminator.

Fisker's Rocket looks like a big turd i hope they
skip the Supercharged it's played out to me
get with the program and add turbos no body wants a 10 speed
auto in a GT500 come dude :headbonk:

Actually, I'd bet you're in the minority in the 10 speed. Lol

This isn't the early 2000's where a manual gave you a few advantages.

The new autos walk all over the manuals.

Sure it's fun to row your own. I enjoy shifting gears myself.

But today you'd be leaving a noticeable amount of performance on the table not going with an 8-10 speed auto.

AWD would be a dream too. At least on a KR.

WOULD TAKE THE GT500 into BEYOND SUPERCAR territory.

And I don't know a soul that wouldn't want that.

And before you talk about what that would do to price, look at what the GT350 does at its price point.

My (very real, very feasible) dream:

Gt500 new, full modern sheet metal.
Twin turbo flat frank 5.2.

800hp / 700tq

10 speed auto with manual option.

AWD option (if not standard)

magnaride standard.

315s in back minimum.

Leather recaros (with alcantara or better center inserts) standard.

Apple CarPlay for lightweight infotainment. Seriously, OEM nav/infotainment is stupid heavy and cumbersome. Should add no more than two pounds done right. Not including speakers.

A curb weight of no more than 3850. The lower the better.

+1000

An automatic GT500 with paddle shifting would be faster than a manual could ever dream to be.

I'll stand by my original prediction:

5.2L bored-out Coyote w/ SC
~700 HP
7 spd DCT derived from the new GT Supercar
Magneride from GT350
Premium trim only
20" wheels standard
Drag-focused handling/Ride...still a capable handler but softer than GT350

I REALLY hope they stay away from supercharging on this one. Turbo is the way to go. period.

I have a hard time seeing ford putting a manual transmission in any performance car. Ford puts manual only in all of the performance cars.

Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Focus RS, Mustang ecoboost PP, Mustang GT PP, GT350, GT350R are all manual only. I remember reading somewhere a while ago that Ford was more concerned with the driving experience than eeking out that extra .2 sec for an auto. Besides the fact that Ford hasn't exactly had good luck with DCT transmissions in cars lately lol.

The only performance car getting an automatic is the Ford GT for homologation reasons. I am actually sort of surprised that the Raptor doesn't come in a manual lol.

It is, but you can't package it and still meet all of Ford's standards for dynamic clearances. I'm very confident it'll be a blower.

The only way they could do it would be to drastically change the engine architecture and go to a V-nested single, twin-scroll turbo ala M5/M6. They'd probably have to go dry sump to get it to package under the hood (or just put a big dent in the hood! :headbang:).

I agree with 9secondko on AWD as a possibility. I may have been the first to mention AWD in the GT500.
I noticed on Jalopnik today that Dodge has an AWD Challenger at SEMA. I think these manufacturers have come to realize that if you want to put a car that has 700+ horsepower on the street, it needs to have more traction to take advantage of it.
There may be some on this forum who can handle 700+ HP with RWD by using non-street legal tires, but the average buyer won't use these tires and can't handle that much raw power without them. It ends up being "wasted" horsepower.
