Preload on the bearing and/or stops the clicking some experience. There seems to be some conflicting info. Some found they were never installed from the factory and don't have an issue.
I've always used them and never had the clicking so who knows.

Also, maybe there's a difference between years but on a 2016 the knuckle and axle don't have to come out to replace the bearing, just get the brakes out of the way.
It seems like GT350s didn’t get it. Why is truthfully beyond me.

So as suspected the bitch broke. Anywho... gotta get some loctite and antisieze tomorrow. In the meantime I cleaned up the housing. Anything else I need to do ?

I just replaced my bearing hub and this lockwasher this past weekend on my 2015 Ecoboost. Drove on highway no problem. This action fixed the no ABS, cruise, Hill assist, and traction control.

I put anti seize on axle thread and little high temp grease on inside axle knuckle that meets bearing hub area.

6 inch pipe to meet whatever torque spec your heart desires!

Always a good time to slap extended studs/new hub on if wanted as well. The rabbit hole doesn’t end LOL.

Got a new hub ha-ha.
Great minds think alike!

get new bolts too, I’m pretty certain I’ve almost rounded half of mine chasing the proper torque spec LOL.

luckily for us Ford isn’t big on TTY for suspension stuff, my European crappers need replacement hardware all the time.

Only driver side had it on my 17. Took out the abs sensor randomly one night. Found it in several pieces. Never put it back in or replaced.

After reading up on that bullshit thrust washer...

I have no confidence in it for a high performance application.

So I left that little prick out.

Got all my nannies & ABS back .

Hallelujah.

Did you get the actual purpose of it in your research?

Definitely educate me, I won’t be replacing it if the revised ones I slapped in fail again if that’s a solution. :cwl:

Primary purpose is to keep the axle nut from backing out by
keeping tension on it. Tell me how, Ford

It's true purpose:

Is to break. Especially the drivers side.
And to cause the owner much grief.
