What is the purpose of this thrust washer? Mine and alot of others have broken and caused ABS light to go on. I have no idea what this washer does. Ford calls it a thrust washer. Anyone?

After messing around with the half shaft and hanging out at the Ford shop today we've come to the conclusion that these thrust washer serve no real purpose other than to keep the Hub / spindle from getting seized onto the half shaft.

The must salt the roads in Iowa pretty well. Lots of corrosion on that unit.
Might want to be generous with the never-seize when putting it back together.

Yes unfortunately they do. I keep alot of silicone spray and rust inhibiting sprays on hand. Alot of what you see is just moisture on bare metal. Bare metal will rust within hours of exposure to moisture.

The washer has zero to do with the ABS system. The ABS is all housed in the rear wheel bearing assembly. Once i changed out the wheel bearing assembly my cruise and everything worked fine. No i didnt put the thrust washer back on.

Ironically - my ABS went out after putting in the new wheel bearing. Wondering if the new bearing I put in is defective.

My SCT tuner isn't giving me any codes on the issue.

ABS codes will not show up on anything but Ford software. Id make sure everything went back together correct. Or you could have the other side went out just by a weird coincidence.

Three weeks of unsat driving. I had problems with my 2015 Echoboost that I had no ABS, Trac Contrl, cruise, Driver hill assist etc.. All lights on... Tried my scanner..no help. Took to my local mech, he scanned and identified left rear sensor reading bogus 100mph. He offered to give car back to me and suggested to replace sensor. If it does not work take to dealer. Replaced sensor did not fix. Using limited scan info and a Mustang forum replaced left rear bearing hub assy and lock washer. Good news problem gone!!! I am not completely convinced that the washer in someway had something to do with false speed reading. It was broken when I replaced it. When broke was it getting in parth of sensor etc..??.I read on anorher forum that the individual replaced just washer and fixed problem.

Curious as to what a thrust washer does, I checked with a company that makes them.

https://www.bronzelube.com/thrust-w...ole in reducing friction between moving parts.

"Thrust Washers, Often Overlooked But Undeniably Essential, Play A Pivotal Role In The Realm Of Mechanical Components. These Flat Bearings Ensure That The Movement Between A Rotating Component And A Stationary One Is Smooth, Efficient, And Free Of Wear."
