Random Topic; relocating to the south

I must caution anyone who's considering moving to TX, Arkansas, or anywhere that falls within Tornado alley: The weather here is getting worse every year. When you're brooming hail out of your kitchen, waiting for the roofing guys to get around to you, while living with tarps over your house, and getting 220 dents pulled out of your truck, you'll long for life up north. I know...the winters up there blow.....but running for your life from a tornado or from baseball sized hail will put things into perspective.

Just don't move to a more conservative state with lower taxes and then vote for liberal government that will mess up the new area just as much as Connecticut. That's all I ask.

I don't think I could handle the humidity in the south east. I would go south west before doing that. I realize it's a much farther move and nothing is perfect, though.
Sir the political way this state is ran is 90% the reason for me leaving Haha they make it impossible to survive here, and blatantly admit to more rises in taxes and NEW taxes that will cost me just to drive on the streets here on top of every other tax there already is. Being self employed here is impossible, which is why I'd like to find somewhere that I know I can contribute to the workload and help the area in general. Not looking to change/impose anyone's ways. Like I said the Carolinas I'm told have alot of work and are in demand of contractors, so if I could contribute to the building of a great state and enjoy the area as well then why the hell not. Here in CT I work to survive, doesnt matter how much you make here, the state takes everything and has nothing to show for it

I travel the entire Southeast for a living. If you move down here make sure you stay in the Piedmont (wiki Piedmont United States), or north of it. Think Birmingham, Atlanta, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charlotte, Winston Salem, Greensboro. South of that you get into the Coastal Plain which is real hot and humid in the summer. Montgomery, Macon. Columbia, Charleston. Florida is similar except stay very near either coast. Once you go even 5 miles inland it is very, very hot and humid in the summer.

You might get snow once, or twice a year, but it melts away in a day. I drive my car year round, and the Jeep (with no top or doors) 6-7 months a year.

I'm eyeballing to move down south too next year. Six months cooped up during MN winters is too brutal. Scenery/atmosphere is the biggest thing for me.

Southeast/Florida are out. I'm not a fan of humidty and being enclosed by trees wherever you go.
Loved California. However, laws and cost of living are pushing me off.

Utah seems nice. Never been there. Will find out during Track Attack/Backpacking Zion in May.
Arizona seems OK. May be too deserty for me.
Texas I'm unsure about. May be too flat. A lot of areas seem rather cramped too (Houston/Dallas).
The wife and I loved Utah when we were there. Zion is amazing - I could spend a week or two there every summer for the rest of my life. We even have looked at the prices of houses there. Fairly reasonable IMO.

I know it can get pretty hot and cold there, though. We were there in October and the weather was great.

I hate heat and humidity so when I punch out in two years I’m heading to the Northwoods of Mn. Having snow and cold means buying a snow machine and having fun.

Going there or Tower or Orr.....I like blizzards, bring it. Nothing better than walking in the winter woods at night in a blizzard...The south has to much heat, humidity, traffic, people and old drivers.

It was the Boston traffic that got me up to the White Mountains in NH 20 years ago!

Good luck w your plans.

We relocated from NJ to Charleston, SC in 2012, lived here for five years, then I took a job outside of Orlando, FL. Lived there for a year, and moved back to Charleston exactly a year to the day that we left. I lived in NJ for thirty years, and while Charleston is hot, it's nowhere NEAR the oppression that you get in Florida. NJ was hot in June, July, and August, in Charleston, it's hot May - September. It'll start cooling down in October, and you get literally perfect weather in November, December, February, March, and April. Morning temps are in the 40s and 50s, and afternoon temps are in the mid 70s, every single day. I daily drive my GT/PP on summer tires year round, and have only had a few issues where I couldn't drive it due to ice storms (lots of bridges).

Traffic has gotten progressively worse since 2012, because of the all the building and construction. Depending on the time of day you're driving, and in which direction, I-526 and I-26 are nightmares. From an industrial standpoint, we have a MASSIVE Boeing plant which keeps getting bigger and bigger, Mercedes has a plant close to here, and Volvo is building another massive facility in Holly Hill. Prices for real estate, especially in and around Charleston or Mount Pleasant are fairly high. We just bought a $500k house - 2700 square feet, 1/4 acre - but our property taxes are only $1800/year. Flood and homeowner's/earthquake/wind insurance comes to about $2500/year, though. Still, compared to what we'd have paid for a house in NJ, our house would have cost upwards of $750k, with $12-15k/year property taxes.

Charleston has a LOT of intangibles, though. With the traffic comes the amazing weather, great beaches, loads of historical stuff, a decent car scene (though only one drag strip, and it's pretty shitty), and a million freaking things to do outside. There are only a couple weeks in the summer that I'd consider to be very hot, and it'll be in the high 80s and 90s for the better part of June - August, but having moved away once, I wouldn't trade this place for the world.

Maybe southern Spain.

JR

Great information, thanks for the thoughts !

I'll throw my vote in for western North Carolina, whatever we have in weather it won't last long. Yeah, we have some heat and humidity but it's a small price to pay for four distinct seasons. Our spring and fall are awesome, and yes you can drive your car 12 months here as well. No putting the car away for 6+ months of winter. As noted, some like the snow and cold, others like the coastal life. We have great mountain roads, it's not overly crowded in the western part of the state and it's simply beautiful.

Atlanta is an okay place. There's a sort of "culture in the ether" here I don't vibe with compared to other southern cities, but the city is booming despite itself so that's a good sign.

I'm fairly biased against MN, actually. At least as far as weather goes. I think it's too hot and humid in the summer, and winter is too long and cold. I love fall and spring, but some years they are way too short. When you get a really nice weather day you definitely don't take it for granted.

I wouldn't even want to live up north in MN. Used to spend some time during the summer in a cabin off Devil's Track lake near Grand Morais. It's nice near Superior, but when you get inland it's way too hot and humid. And between the mosquitoes and biting flies - even the handful of perfect weather days can be a little tough to bear.
