My wife's cat was a real recluse when she lived with her cousin who had her own cat. Crookshanks (wife's cat) did not like the other cat and was scared of it. He hid in her closet for months and wouldn't come out. She had to move the food, water, and litter box to her closet. He weighed about 6 or 7 pounds.. Literally starving himself to death.
She decided to move in with me. I had a 4 year old female chocolate lab named Willie who had only been around cats that were awful so she chased them. Willie and Crookers were a match made in heaven. They fell in love. We put the cat in the kitchen for the first thime and they looked at each other and it was all over. Cat fattened up to like 10lbs and they couldn't be separated.
We put Willie down after 16 years last May and had the cat outside (I think this is important, we should have had him inside for it) and the next day we left for Arkansas to escape the crazy Covid numbers here in AZ (worse now) and do some social distancing. We left in the morning and the cat stayed outside with my buddy coming over every day to bring him inside and hang out. Cat was totally normally when my buddy was over. Eating, wanting loving, etc...
I returned to AZ about a month later and left the family in AR. When I got home Crooker's walked around the house for two weeks and meowed constantly. He didn't want to have anything to do with me. Nothing made him happy.
At the end of that two weeks I went back to Arkansas to meet up with my family and we spent another month there. Once again with my buddy coming over every day to hang out and feed the cat. He was over for about an hour a day and the cat was totally all about hanging out with him.
When we finally returned the cat didn't want to have anything to do with us. He walked around the house and meowed constantly. Wouldn't eat, drink. Just meowed.
Two days later Crookshanks was dead at about 17 years old.
So, you could say that the cat was past his prime, but I'm pretty sure he was waiting for Willie Dynamite (The dog was named after a pimp on a Starz movie I watched, look it up, hilarious movie) and when she didn't return, he went to join her.
On the lighter side of things, here is our new combination.. It's a little tougher and not quite love at first site but Ash (cat) hasn't eaten Emmy yet and they have had plenty of time together when Emmy is out.
Thanks for listening
