Music quality through usb is 10 times that of streaming through smart phone. And i haven't figured out any way to play random. I just made a playlist with 1to3 songs from each folder(I have over 130 folders on a 64gb thumb drive) I listen to it constantly

You could just as well put your music directly on your phone's local storage, and use a player app to have a manageable library to create playlists or shuffle out of. I'm in full agreement that wired > wireless but, playing straight off a USB stick just seems impractical. Seems like you'd be treating it more like a CD.

I have music directly on my phone and it doesn't sound anywhere near as clean as the thumb drive. And yes it pretty much is like a cd as I have over 130 CDs on it.

I'll have to look in my car, but I seem to remember a crossed arrows icon that was for random and a more circular arrow icon for repeat. I'm running an iPod in mine...but used a USB drive in my former SHO.

I haven't got an answer for your usb drive.
What I use is an old Ipod nano filled up. It will do random and repeat from the Sync screen. It probably doesn't have the same quality as a USB drive but it is in my convertible so any greater audio quality would probably be a waste anyway.

Wired is not necessarily any better than wireless if we're talking playing the same file over BT vs USB. They're both fully digital and [potentially] lossless mediums of transporting data like music. But if you mean a [high enough bitrate] mp3 is better than, say, Spotify, you're prob right... though I doubt most people can tell the difference.

Create playlists in a media app on your pc like Windows Media Player or Groove Music. The playlists will be stored in your computers Music folder under Playlists. Copy them to the USB drive. Index the drive in your car and you can use voice commands to play those lists. You just need to remember what you called them. Or browse the thumb drive Playlist folder. Tap on the shuffle play button. Very easy once you set it up.

If you click both the X and circle it will play the entire playist in a shuffled order and then repeat the entire playlist in the same shuffled order.

At least that's how it works with just one large usb file. I have never tried setting up folders but I have 800+ songs on my usb stick and that's what mine does.

I just spent two days working a USB drive with 64GB of musica converting a good deal of it into *.mp3 because the Pioneer deck i got for the 2005 King Ranch didn't like *m4a. Check your files for other than mp3's. BTW, the Mustang plays all of my files regardless of format that I have. Enjoy.
