iPod play list on USB Thumb Drive

Hello.. I have two questions...

I copied my iTunes Playlist to a USB thumb drive. It did not assign track numbers. Is there a format for manually adding track numbers. I am doing this because the track indicator in shuffle mode jumps close to the last few songs then stops. I'm thinking if it had track numbers it would know to the lower tracks and play them as well. Thoughts?

Second, the USB thumb drive was quite warm when I removed it. Is it on the entire time it's plugged in, or only when the car and audio system is on?

Just a wild guess, but playlists would only be supported on an Apple device, as I'll bet the playlist info is something generated by iTunes and interpreted by an iDevice but that is not embedded in the song file tags themselves. Similarly, I adjusted the volume of much of my library in iTunes but that info was lost when I copied from iTunes onto my USB drive.
