“Real Mustang enthusiasts use prop rods”. So...here’s what I did so the rod would not mar my white hood.

I bought some 1/2” shrink tubing from True Value Hardware ($3.50), fitted the first piece just past where the rod contacts the hood, then shrank it into place with the kid’s blow dryer! They will never know.

Then, I cut a second piece to cover the every end of the rod, so that the tubing did not stop half way around the last 2 curves. Shrank it down...and was done!

Until I enter the 21st century, I will stay with my prop rod.

Thanks

Good idea OP. I went with the Ford PERFORMANCE STRUT KIT.
So did I. It looks great, and gets that crappy rod out of the way so I can see and work on the engine bay.

A couple of years ago when I had a prop rod I used a piece of coolant overflow hose from the auto parts store that cost a few bucks. It would just slide on with some effort, and looked like an OEM part. My reason for doing that was for car shows, where someone (or me) could bump the prop and cause the hood to come crashing down.

The Rod works for the guys that don’t work on their engines I’m guessing, or they would realize it gets in the way!! I have a set being done....”BULLITT Specific”....bodies will be DHG!!! ...different! I’ll leave the Rod in place.

I was favoring the FP kit from AM, but the reviews were lukewarm as to the strength of the lift. The kit from Steeda costs twice as much but appears to be much stronger. Any opinions?

Was at a car show with my 14 Shelby next to other shelbies.a strong wind lifts the hood up off the prop rod on car next to me and fell across fender denting hood and fender.i immediately got hydraulic lifts. Just had them put on my new gt.

At a recent car show, I saw a GT350 with hood up and he had a bungie cord that hooked into the hood rod slot and to a ring mounted on a point near the rod base. Looked like a cheap simple solution for those wanting to keep the hood rod.

The prop rod or "In the way Rod" is hanging on my garage wall. The set of Redline hood struts are in place on my 2018 GT. By the way they were installed new on my 2011 GT, then on my 2015 GT, and then onto my 2018 GT. They don't seem to be failing and just might make an appearance on my 2020 GT. But I'm thinking why push my luck. I'll probably purchase a new set for my new car. Just Saying.

Cool idea I might do this as well.
Most Hondas/Imports have a 2nd prop rod hole on the hood closer to the firewall which makes your hood stand almost completely vertical for when working on your car. Don't know why other manufacturers don't do this...

I installed RedLine black struts. Under $100 and work great!

Even a non-mechanic like me was able to install them.

Highly recommended!

I would put a prop rod to support the hood in the same category as using baling wire to hold up an exhaust system. Both do the job but both are cheap, tacky, crude and totally unacceptable. I had struts on my GT within 30 minutes of taking it home after delivery.

I also used Redline.....they work as expected and it was very easy to do. They were my second mod after putting on rock guards on the wheel wells.
