Im performing the OPG install and following the ford service manual (keyway 12 o clock, rotate to 5 o clock, etc). I

What i would like to understand, for my own edification, what is the reason for turning the engine over during the removal/reinstall? Why not just set the keyway at 12 o clock, remove both chains (use a paint mark ahead of time), then reinstall in the same location? Is there a mechanical reason why this isn't possible?

I am not suggesting i would like to use this method, i will follow the service manual to the letter, I just like to understand the theory of "why" on what i work on!

Thanks in advance.

They are simply getting you to rotate the crank so that:
1. The keyway is visible
2. The chains are loose enough to remove them

I didn’t worry about following it. You’re actually far more likely to end up confused by doing it their way, especially if you become interrupted during it.

I was also wondering that also, as I am about to install opg in my car. Why not just take off chains, make sure not to rotate anything without chains on, then put the chains back lined up with the marks. super easy

No reason you can’t using your own index marks. If you make any adjustments, to take tension off as an example, you run the risk of coming out of timing but should still be able to make corrections. I’ve done it the Ford way 5 times on different builds and it’s never been an issue. Using the shadow links makes me question nothing.
