This time used motorcraft full syn 5w50. For the very first time in 7 years and 30K miles, the TICK is present and with a vengeance.
The 5w-50 motorcraft is crap oil. It shears down to a 30 weight in 1000 miles or less

Well found the euro pennzoil 5w40 oil, used a ford filter and replaced the plastic plug as well. It seems a bit quieter, response is good, and feels nice also prefilled the filter as well.

Wonderful. That’s 8+ quarts of new synthetic I’m going to drain and replace soon.

Why on earth would Whipple say they “highly recommend Motorcraft 5w50 full synthetic” right there in the installation manual for the 15-17 and 18+ gen5? If it’s inferior oil especially in a demanding application like that where a lot of people are going hammer on it all the time or track it? It doesn’t make sense….i would think that company would want their systems to be (relatively) reliable and advise their customers properly.

Crap 5W50 is still way better than any 5W20.

It’s just weird that they’d recommend what they must know is crap oil unless they’re just throwing sunshine Fords way. You’d think they’d just say “quality synthetic 5w50”.

sorry I’m just annoyed.

Okay, I just looked at Fords own 2020 GT500 manual. Specifies Motorcraft (of course) 5w50 full synthetic, the same stuff I just put in my Whipple’d GT.

If it was so bad that it dropped effective weight or whatever quickly you’d think Ford would have v expensive warrantied failures on their hands, esp with the way in which many owners would drive their warrantied GT500, as Ford is well aware.

Just trying to convince myself that I probably don’t need to dash out and replace the liquid garbage in my oil pan right away. But the advice you guys give is well received…in a couple thousand miles I’ll swap it with Pennzoil euro 5w40.

You could use a 5W50 from Mobil 1, Castrol, AMSOIL, Redline...

Heck mix it with some 15W50!

If one were hellbent on a 5w50 my first choice would be the Mobil1 followed by redline. I’m using redline ONLY because it’s almost 5w60 and stays viscous enough through the life to allow my exhaust vct to accurately control when also turning the big xdi pump.

It shears out of grade, but it is still better then any 5w-20.

Whipple might own Motorcraft stock. Who knows why they recommend it.

Might be handshake deal with Ford, plus for ease of sticking to the warranty

You could be right.

Still, the fact that that is what Ford says to put in the GT500, makes me feel a little better. If it were so bad that it failed engines they wouldn’t recommend it. The money they make by GT500 owners buying 8-10 quarts at oil change time pales in comparison to the cost to Ford of a significant percentage of Predator failures under warranty where the owners followed the manufacturer recommendations to the letter. Where Ford knows many of these people will push their cars hard.

Again, I’m only saying this to justify to myself that I don’t need to drain a bunch of new synthetic oil right away. But based on what people I respect here are saying the next time won’t be Motorcraft 5w50.

Just because it goes out of grade fast doesn't mean it won't protect your engine. Just that there are better options out there.

Maybe the folks here who like research can dig up who
Makes Fords oil? Might be Ford but I would be surprised
