On point Mike.Most synthetics are Group 3, which comes from a refinery and is really just cleaned-up, fancy conventional oil. And Group 1 and 2 conventional oils could not pass modern industry standards if they didn't have some 3, 4 or 5 blended in. So all conventional oils are technically synthetic blends, and most synthetics are really just fancy conventionals. The only one thats in a gray area, in my mind, is the GTL-based Group 3+ that Pennzoil makes. It doesn't come from a refinery or chemical plant and it doesn't fit well in the 3 category but definitely isn't 4 or 5.
The API brain trust all short circuited and threw a Hail Mary labeling it Group III+.
I’m no one but honestly it needs its own class but that just might devalue Group IV & V.
