I know this can me a who likes what scenario. I see quite a few people favor Amsoil. Lucas Oil and Mobil 1. Definitely all good oils. I have even seen a few mention Motul, which i have experience with and know to be a great oil. One i don’t see is Royal Purple. Is this not a good/preferred oil?

thanks!

I don't keep up with Formulations anymore, but bob is the oil guy is a great place. The truth nowadays is if you buy the right weight for your usage in Mobil 1, Penn Plat, etc... name brand off the shelf, you are more than OK. I stopped chasing boutiques about 15 years ago and just use Mobil 1. Ive actually been using Mobil 1 since 1998. People are going to argue their brands, but when people argue over say PP vs M1, or Amsoil, I laugh. Its ford vs chevy. I put more stock in the right weight, change intervals and type of oil (full syn, semi syn, etc...).

You always have to consider the masses out there running the cheapest shit they can buy for the longest interval they can, or what the car tells them when its time. And high mileage motors are everywhere. We mod here, we drive hard here, so we are enthusiasts and hyperfocus on things like oil.

Back when I owned a camaro and then a corvette. Seems that most people ran Mobil 1. I eventually switched to Royal Purple because my local performance shop used it when I went in for work. Honestly as long as you use a known brand I don`t think there will be a problem.

I've recently heard about Royal Purple from a seasoned mechanic who says it's one of the best. He didn't expand on why. Never heard about it till about a week ago.

I've always heard good things about Royal Purple and have always been interested in trying it. ( I do use Royal Purple in my gearbox) I just daily my car with occasional "spirited driving" so I never felt the increase in cost would benefit me. I've used Mobil 1 forever now without any issues so that's just what i stick with.

RP came to my plant and said they would save us mucho dinero if we switched to their gear oil. We said sure as long as you would guarantee the gear boxes. Mind you we used non synth mineral oil for decades.

RP replaced every gearbox we had. Maybe they learned and improved the formula but I would dump it in a drain before I'd put that crap in my engine.

That is the noisiest oil made. Try it in a Harley and you will drain it out the same day.
Didn't know this was a motorcycle site. What's your point? I don't even pretend to know what a motorcycle requires.

Something people don't generally know about amzoil is that it is a multi level marketing scheme. Also known as a pyramid scheme.

I dont support them for that reason alone, they also make bold claims that nobody else seems to even get close to. If they really had something that nobody else could compete with, they would sell to manufacturers, there's alot more money to be made as an OEM than there is selling to enthusiasts. The whole thing stinks of BS.

At the end of the day the deal with oil isn't about brands, you need to focus on the rating, if the oil meets or exceeds the required Ford specifications called out in the manual then its good to use. Ford will have designed the motor to retain its full service life when operated with the oil spec called out in the manual. If you meet that you're good.

2 Oils are crap from your experience, with one being used in the gear box.....what oil do you run in the engine in your Mustang?

I use either Liqui moly, castrol, valvoline or any oil that meets A3/B4 spec.

I like liquiMoly best because it lasts 8K miles in an air cooled HD engine that gets beat to death. Oil tested good by Blackstone labs.

Run what you want.

IDK. Sold lubricating oils for 17 years. Attended many training seminars from several manufacturers. Every producer has their benchmarking that clearly demonstrates that their oil is the "BEST".

I tend to fall in with the crowd that looks to ensure that the oil meets or exceeds specification of the engine manufacturer and also meets or exceeds their need for what they use their vehicle for. The waters have been so muddied by the producers in their efforts to gain market share that it takes a helluva lot of time and effort to try to sort the marketing BS from the facts. Suffice it to say that no matter who produces the product they are going to tell you theirs is the best because of any of about 30 reasons. And thus, you get about 30 different price points.
We all have experience with lube oils. Some more than others. Educate yourself the best you can or want to. There are many "experts" in the arena (I do not consider myself one of them), so listen, study, learn and make your choice. If you get 250K miles out of your engine, brag. My bet is that no amount of marketing/advertising will ever get you to change from that brand. Product loyalty is better than any multimillion dollar ad campaign.

If you feel you need brand X because it will add HP or sounds better when the engine is running, buy it. In the end 98% of us never push oil to its limit. In my years in the industry, I never encountered a lubricant failure. In fact, I never had a qualified expert (chemist, formulator, people with PHD's in the field) ever confirm a lubricant failure.

So, with all of this said, run what you feel is best for your machine. The stuff is like breakfast cereal, there are many, many flavors and brands. If you like sugar buy Captain Crunch. If you want fiber buy Shredded Wheat. Whatever makes you go the best.

Notice that I did not recommend any brand. Only what meets or exceeds the manufacturer specification.

The example I gave about gear boxes the cause of the failures was due to aeration of the oil. Foam won't lube.
