Oil Filter Question

Today I went to a local shop to get the oil changed. The whole time I was watching them like a hawk and I noticed that the oil filter looked small, but I figured they know what they are doing, they had all the vehicle information, so I didn't say anything at the time but now my OCD is kicking in and I'm worried that in fact they installed an oil filter that's too small. Obviously the filter fit, otherwise they wouldn't have been able to install it. My question is, assuming worst case scenario that they installed a filter that's too small, what's the worst that can happen? I know, kind of a stupid question but any help appreciated.

The Mustang oil filter either for the 4 or 8 cyl is not a large filter, so this may be all in your mind. I would go down to your local AutoZone and get an oil filter in your hand that is proper for your car. I think you’ll find the one they put on is OK.

the filter does look small for these cars. Your only solution is to lift one side and place jack stand, crawl under and read the number.

The concern is valid, but you need to confirm what's actually installed on the car, the brand filter and its PN#. The receipt reference could be incorrect. They might have also referenced another brand of filter with a Fram-like PN#. If Fram filters are involved, Ford Coyote V8 uses "10575" in the Fram PN#. I'd return, explain myself, see if they can put on the lift real quick and confirm with you.

If you find the filter to be an actual Fram FP12060, that appears to fit GM engines, not Ford. I'd never do it myself, but knowing the dimensions, matching another filter with a different PN# is possible. Maybe their stock was low and this is their practice. Or, they grabbed the wrong filter. I'm speculating.

So as to maintain the warranty, I'd have them replace the filter with the correct one, either one from their stock or one you provide (and they pay you for). Alternatively, if having little confidence, seek out another shop and have them install the right filter.
