Here it comes...I'm already bracing for it...lol.

Motor oil does not "break down". There is only two reason a regular oil change is needed. Contaminates have reached max thresh hold and additves, detergents are exspended.
All ECE ( enterenal combustion engines ) have three products we don't want inside. Carbon, dust/dirt and wear particles. Carbon- natural byproduct of ECE. Dust/dirt- cause people don't replace air filters as they should.( you should see the ones I see on a DAILY basis) Most wear particles are a result of the other two.
Engine oil serves to lubricate the moving parts and add in maintaining temps. The additives thatnare added ( and very sercret and protected for each manufacturer.) include detergents, to clean carbon and condensation. As the oil removes and suspends these particles its passed through the oil filter which traps what it can. We need to change or refresh our oil due to the fact the filter is " full" and the oil can no longer suspend the particles. Now wear sets in...
General rule if thumb for a direct mounted filter is 1k miles per 1 quart of oil capacity. Thats the MAX life expectancy to safety operate. So, a 2015 mustang v8, holding 8 quarts of oil, with a direct mounted filter would be 8k miles max. Where is this info? No where you will ever read. Sorry. It's a joint experiment between myself and, lets call them company x. ( major oil manufacturer).
This is what I do for a living. Own 4 lube shops. I've been to almost every manufacturers facility, event, conference ...etc. Spent the last 6 years with X studying and analyzing new and used oil.
Each person will do as they feel best and no one will alter that. Be regular, use an API approved oil and check your darn air filters! So easy, yet so over looked. Sorry, my pet peeve for the day...
Sorry, but every time I read or hear of oil breaking down, I cringe a little.

Let it begin...
Ok, I'll be the first to ask.....Are you serious? Oil does not break down??? Heat, age, Contaminants, all contribute to oil "breakdown". It loses it's viscosity and lubricating abilities with age and contaminants.
If you really do own a lube center, I dare you to post what you just said here in your waiting room. For all of your customers to read.
This is one of the most ridiculas things I have ever read here.
I sure am glad I will never ever go to your shop for an oil change. What do you do? Just change your customers filters to save money?

It's not just the type of oil or mileage, it's the volume of oil as well. Larger volume means less wear per oz, if that makes any sense. So temps take longer to reach both cooling and heater. This equates to less "using up" the oil and getting a longer life span out of an oil change. Oil technology hasn't changed super significantly in the past 5-10 years, it's the amount of oil in your stang that's making the larger difference. Saying all of this, I'm only doing 5k mile oil changes. :)

Just my opinion.

All of that is supposed to be taken into account with the Oil Life Monitor system. If you drive your car pretty spirited, the OLM will most likely be at 0% before 5,000 miles.

I thought I'd do mine at 3k, but I drove from MD to IN, and I'm at about 3900 miles now -- I'll probably just wait until 4500-5000 miles to do it at this point -- I honestly don't think the car is going to suffer in any way. I may try a fluid swap on the gearbox at the same time to see if that smooths out my shifts some -- that's another thread entirely though...

First at 1k, with mag plug installed. Dealer freebee at 5k. Next (soon) at 10k under ESP. Plan on every 5k until....

I beg to differ- I have two road course track days (300 minutes of hot lapping...) and 3800 HARD miles on royal purple synthetic and my OLM is 74%.

Well, for some reason mine is going down at a much faster rate than that.

So who has the best method? is there any trick on filter removal that doesn't involve oil getting on the car frame and components? I assume you guys are doing these oil changes yourselves.

oil in 5.0 engine

If you will read your owner's manual, it says 8.0 quarts of oil.

Wife drives a 2013 Ford Explorer and we use the OLM feature. I was skeptical until someone sent in an oil sample at 10,000 miles and found the oil still had plenty of "life" left in it. I'll use the OLM feature when I get my 16 in.

someone here advised to change at 7500 or when the OLM tells you to do it, whichever comes first.

i think that pretty much means i'll be changing every 7500, since my OLM said it was about 36% at that point.

Page 399...I'm changing mine no earlier than 4k but no later than 6k. I like to keep the fluid fresh. Too lazy to do a UOA lol. Would be more inclined to do one if oil changes were more expensive but they are only $50 with a filter at the dealer. I wouldn't extend my oil changes by much if I went with 100% synthetic. I may use Pennzoil ultra on my next one though if it performs against heat better than OEM 5w20.
