MGW shifter on all my MT-82s made them a dream. Ran boost on 2 of the 3 no problems.
Yep, MGW is a must if you have MT-82. The stock shifter is absolute junk.

I had a 2012, 2015, and 2021 GT I bought brand new with the MT-82. Broke them in for 1,500 miles and still had the the high rpm lockout, even after switching fluid and going to a MGW unfortunately.

That’s not to say the the A10’s I’ve had have been flawless either though.
Yes that was an issue with mine too, but the high RPM lockout from what I have researched is mostly the stock clutch. If you upgrade to Mantic or other high quality clutch it should eliminate the high rpm lockout or reduce it.

If you go MT-82 I would think a Fluid change, MGW and Mantic clutch would make it perfect.

Yeah that’s what fixed it on my 2012. I believe the 18+ have twin disc clutch assemblies from the factory, no? Thought that was supposed to fix it on the 2018+ but it didn’t on my ‘21 for some reason.

Order banks for MY23 are now closed. But there are 23s on the lots getting some good discounts.

MY23 was abbreviated, to make way for the S650.

If you do find something, please return and let us know what you bought.
Regarding the MT-82, I have a 22' GT with the MT-82 and it's a blast to drive. I believe the MT-82s after 22' are outsourced from Mexico, instead of China. The TR-3160s are also outsourced from Mexico.

My ‘22 MT-82 has been a dream. Granted it doesn’t have a lot of miles yet. However it feels like an entirely different trans my old ‘14.

The ‘14 would lock me out at high RPM (clutch) and still felt very inconsistent even with an MGW that was trans-mounted.

In contrast, the D-4 from Mexico has never locked me out, and the shifter is actually pretty decent. If you haven’t driven an MT-82 since they started making them in Mexico and after all the improvements I would say you have an out-dated opinion of the trans. It is -leagues- better than my original and was the first thing I noticed on the test drive. I was expecting the same “rowing through rocks” as the original but that never happened. My only complaint is the gears are super tall. I plan on installing 4.09’s in the future to remedy this.

Yes, the fluid doesn’t like it when you slam gears while it’s cold. Just warm it up first before driving like an ape and you will be fine. Also you can swap the fluid out for cheap if you are in a colder climate (I’m in South Fl) which helps a lot.

There is a chance you will get a bad clutch which will lock you out when shifting at high RPM. It’s not cheap to replace but there is a well-known fix. You can bandaid it with a shifter however the real fix is a clutch.

Getting a bad clutch would be the biggest risk. The rest of the problems aren’t really big deals with the newer versions of the trans if you understand them and address them appropriately.

They definitely don’t matter when you get that crisp 1-2-3 shift at WOT with the V-8 howling behind you. As much as they are faster, no auto trans will ever come close to that experience.

I had a 2021 GT with the MT-82. I believe that one had a trans produced in Mexico

Why did you get rid of your 21 GT with the MT82-D4? How did you use the car (drag/autocross)?
After breaking the car in for 1,500 miles, I noticed I still had shifting issues even after doing the fluid swap, shifter, and even SS clutch line. It was a daily and I did a decent amount of spirited driving. But I knew if I had issues going in a straight line on a smooth surface, no way it wouldn’t give me issues on an actual road track.

I had to have another surgery and it took a lot longer for me to heal than anticipated. So I went and ordered one initially, but didn’t know if it was going to be produced because of another lockdown causing the chip issue to stagnate again, so I went and picked up a 2022 401 A10 with 3.55s, DAP, AE, B&O.

Not sure on the exact date, but definitely for 2022. I read it on Jalopnik article discussing American vehicles, and it was briefly mentioned in it.

I see you have both, the Tremec in your Mach 1 and the MT 82 in your GT, so you'd really know the difference.

Do you know if the Mach 1 has a different clutch?

I am surprised that the MT 82 now seems to be vastly improved, just because it is built in Mexico. If none of the parts changed, why the difference? Just wondering.

If I remember right, the MT82 D4 that was introduced with the 2018 refresh, initially had issues with broken shift forks. The MT82 in my 2019 Bullitt seems fine, has never locked me out of gear or never missed a shift with it. However, I treat it somewhat gently, being well aware of its flaws.

What bugs me is the "mashed potatoes" feel shifting from 1-2 and then 2-3, which I use the most 'cause gears are so tall. Also, the clutch engagement is weird. I am fully aware that a lot can be done to make it better (fluid, MGW, clutch spring) but I am done modding Mustangs.

After going deep into the GT350 rabbit hole and almost buying one a couple weeks ago, I decided that, while it is the most thrilling driving experience among Mustangs, it is not the right car for me/my use. I am currently trying to wrap up a deal for a gently used Mach 1, which I think is the best of both worlds.

Unless the S650 blows me away in person or they come out with an exceptional specialty model later in the product cycle, the S550 will probably be my last modern era Mustang.

Very wise choice to be done modding Mustangs. I wish it were that easy for me.

It was fun, no doubt, but I was also not yet married and without kid. Now I just want a fun car from the factory to enjoy while having peace of mind with warranty. Yup, gettin' old 👴
