New to me 2020 MT82. Just wondering if what I m feeling is normal and the way it functions. Low mile , non abused clutch .

Car stopped and running on flat ground, push clutch to the floor, put it in gear. I feel it bump into gear almost like an automatic. Very slight, nothing dramatic. I might have had the same feel on my last car but I can t remember. Everything shifts and work smooth. Thanks.

Yep. Mine doesn’t do it when cold. It will do it when hot. I think the clutch expands slightly and barely touches the flywheel or something.

I’m going to switch to some sort of synthetic clutch fluid and see if taking water absorption out of the equation helps it any. My theory is over the past 3 years since my car was built there is moisture in the fluid and the tolerance is so tight from the factory that this tiny bit of sponginess causes the clutch to not release 100%.

Mine does the same, sometimes I pull it out and put it back in just to make sure it's in gear. For my observations it does it pretty randomly where sometimes it goes into 1st smooth (and those are when I have to pull out and check) and then other times it clunks into gear like you described. Just take it as normal mt82 things (I think they all do this b/w the original mt82 on the 15-17's, the d4 variant in our 18-23, and even on the new S650's too).

My 19 did that from new for a while but somehow stopped doing it around 40-50k miles. Not sure why and I only noticed it stopped after a similar thread popped up a few years back. That's when I realized mine wasn't making that clunk anymore so I'm not sure exactly when it stopped.

I have a 2020 Bullitt and haven’t noticed any ā€œbumpā€ when engaging first gear. However, a lot of the time, I put the car in second gear first, then engage first gear. Old habit, learned to drive on a tractor.

I do not have that feeling when putting it into gear from start on my manual 2016 but these transmissions can feel clunky. Looks like other folks with a car year closer to yours are saying it is normal. I wouldn't invest any time worrying about it. šŸ‘

The bump is normal but try this. Put the clutch in and wait a few seconds before shifting into gear. You won't get the bump. I think what happens is the input side of the tranny, which is turning with the clutch out, spins down before the shift. If you clutch and shift quickly the components have to mesh and there's the bump.

That's my take but maybe someone who knows the innards of the Mt-82 can chime in.

You hit the nail right on the head, as the input shaft and countershaft are still turning when the car is in neutral. Pressing the clutch and pausing for a few seconds, as youā€˜ve said, is the way to prevent the thump, although it’s not hurting anything. Just imagine how much more violent the bump is when quick shifting. It just isn’t noticeable because of the quick stab and release of the clutch, coupled with the RPMs.
