MT Transmission "Galloping" Sound?

Driving home last night I noticed a weird sound when I put the clutch in turning into the neighborhood. It wasn't the normal drive train slap, although that still happened. Thought nothing of it, backed in and parked it.

Sitting in the parking lot today after work the car was idling at about 1200RPM in neutral and I heard what is in the attached video. Its very rhythmic and is pretty noticeable with the stereo off even with the exhaust... which if you have a lot of bass on turn it down and you'll hear it better.

When I push the clutch pedal down everything quiets out and its only the engine you can hear.

Car has 9800 miles on it. Daily driver. Transmission has always been "loud", but i'm fairly confident it was just the synchros doing their thing. heading over to the dealer tomorrow but just want to see what I might be in store for/discuss. Rather be educated than not.

Any ideas?

No sir - completely bone stock MT-82 Transmission.

Its most likely clutch/transmission. It should not sound like that stock, I have some shifter/transmission reinforcements and those noises are typical for such mods, but a bone stock car should not have that kind of noise. I am not sure what it could be exactly, but it'll be repaired/should be repaired

When the clutch pedal is pushed down, that disengages the engine from the input shaft of the transmission, and makes the transmission's input shaft stop rotating.

My guess is that a bearing on the input shaft is going bad.

Can you hear this same noise when the transmission is cold? Or only after it's warmed up after driving?

I'll have to take note of it cold tomorrow but for now its been warm/semi cold.

It also picked up a weird vibration in the rear which i thought was just some bushings creaking due to the colder days (~30*).

Yet just today just trying to find out what was going on with the initial sound i was able to get it to vibrate in the rear while in neutral and light acceleration. Almost as soon as the transmission acted up the rear would act up.

before it would only vibrate on decel around 20-25 mph.

Im thinking these two issues are related.

Put your ear on top of the shifter knob and listed with it idling in neutral with the clutch pedal up, and then again in neutral with the clutch pedal pushed down fully. Do this when cold before driving, and then again after driving around a lot to get the transmission fully hot.

So just gave that a whirl. Nifty little trick. Cars been sitting for about 2 hours now. Started it up and got that "galloping" sound right away.

Ear to the shifter cold - same sound as hot. However when I was listening the sound seemingly came from further up the drive line so i crawled up into the foot well and it sounded like it was right on the other side of the carpet. Definitely clutch/transmission as it goes away with the clutch engaged.

The sound through the shift knob was pretty congruent though from clutch in and clutch out. Just a little more "static" when it was disengage

After having the only mechanic i trust with the car look at it the problem seems to be related to the input shaft or the bearing.

Problem though is Ford has nothing in the pipeline for parts and if we open up the transmission it could be a long long time before its fixed.

So for now we'll drive it and maybe it'll get worse to the point it fails.
