I have had a bunch of rear wheel drive manual transmission cars. None of them were Mustangs, but none of them were this damn noisy either.

Whether it is normal or not, I don't like it.

I hear mine basically when I come to a complete stop, put it into neutral, then put into 1st. Can't hear it unless you have no music or sound in the car. no biggie to me

My theory is synchros. If you were to depress the clutch for about 3-5 seconds then shift into 1st from neutral, I am almost positive you wont experience the thud. So, leads me to believe that the input shaft is not slowing down enough before the synchro stops/synchs the driveshaft with the input shaft and relevant gear. When you press the clutch, the input shaft is still spinning the driveshaft at 750 RPM or whatever idle is although in neutral and not engaged to any gear. Anyway, I dont want to go into a long winded conversation on this, its transmission NVH from the MT-82's, of course, in my opinion.

I don't undertand why the thud is only present when the car is moving with the clutch petal pressed all the way down. Once the car stops, the thud goes away. (while the car is rolling, press the clutch and upshift 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. It seems like something is engaged even with the clutch pressed while the car is moving (synchro?).

I also notice that the thud is not present when down shifting from 3 to 2 and 2 to 1. Only during upshifts.

I only notice the thud when upshifting below 2.5k RPM"s anything north of 3K RPM no thud at all. Its only at low speed intersections or traffic do I ever experience it.

I tend to just not shift below 2.5K anymore. Until I figure out an actual fix to this retarded issue.

When you get the thud, does shifting speed make a difference? In other words, do you move the lever with a quick snap into gear, or do you move it slower and more deliberate? Or does it matter at all? The car I drove had less than 10 miles and felt fine. Does this seem to occur after putting some miles on it or right out of the box?

Speed of the shift doesnt make a difference for me. What does for me is, engine RPM, how long I depress the clutch before I shift (usually 2 full seconds depressed with not thud) and how warm the tranny fluid is.

I had a really cold day last week under 10 degree celcius and 2nd and third grind for 1st couple of shifts.

I just got mine back from the dealership and apparently I am the third person to bring one in with the same problem at this tiny shop.

The official answer from Ford is "because numerous vehicles are experiencing the same concern it is advised that no further repair attempts should be made as this is an operating characteristic of the vehicle."

We need someone to get his in writing and then sticky it

You can only imagine that a large majority of yet to join future members who get a 15+ PP are going to be posting about this, and it cant be expected of them to read through a 20+ page thread to see it is a common thing for these cars.

Just like myself, im sure everyone was a little concerned about the noise at one point. Just think if the internet didn't exist...

I just bought a GT PP. It has about 300 miles on it now. I have a very slight thunk when going from neutral to first but nothing unusual to me. Neutral to reverse is no problem at all. To me it sounds like drivetrain noise, maybe a little slack that is built-in. No thunks when shifting gears. I've had multiple people riding in it and no comments from them about a noise.

I have noticed some variation in shift effort / feel which makes me think there is either some movement from when the engine torques, or just maybe the car is still tight from being new and the torque creates a bind somewhere? I ordered a Steeda trans bracket bushing. Figured it couldn't hurt and it's only $30. Even as-is this car doesn't shift that bad to me, but then I haven't been doing high rpm shifts or drag racing it. I have made a couple of quick 1-2 pulls and the shifting was fine. No doubt, there IS room for improvement. Get the shifting smooth and this car is a "10".

I have a non-PP GT, and I have a slight noise too in these same circumstances, more of a light "click" than a thud. Doesn't seem to affect the shifts at all, glad to hear it is nothing to worry about. I did a get thud once when shifting to 5th under hard acceleration, but that may have been me letting off the clutch too quickly (maybe the synchros?)
