I have a GT-PP and today my shifting clunk is GONE.

I installed a pair of DSS 800hp axles. Done.

I have a GT pp as well and I have the thud. If I drive like a little old lady and shift slow and easy it doesn't do it at all. the faster that I shift the harder the thud is. Sounds like it's coming directly from the bottom of the car, right under the back seats. I'm not too worried about it, I am still under warranty! Lol

Really? And you had the thud every time when shifting 1st through 3rd? And now you don't have it at all?

I know I've read at least one post where the guy said the upgraded axles did not get rid of his thud.

Interesting.

I still have some grind into 3 & 4 when the car is cold but the Big CLUNK I always had from a stop into 1 and then into 2 is gone gone gone. just from these DSS Axles.

I can't say I ever noticed a thud, but I also do not have a factory shifter. I could see it happening when stopped and just putting in gear from neutral, I can't believe this is 20 pages so I haven't read much of it. Do people get this all the time while driving (moving)?

I get it every time shifting into 2nd, and 3rd. Neutal to first usually get it. New shifter has not resolved it for anyone that I've read.

GT PP 100 miles notice thud too

I also notice that the thud is present while I change gears with the clutch pressed down when the car is moving. Clutch petal pressed to the floor should disengage clutch, but it feels like it doesn't completely.

Issue only on 1 to 3 gear. Just doesn't feel or sound normal.

I've owned numerous manual cars and this is the first manual with the thud.

I did a test drive of a manual with 3.55 gears yesterday. It shifted great and I did not notice anything unusual, other than a longer clutch pedal throw than I'm used to with Japanese cars. I didn't do high rpm shifts but just normal driving and some downshifts. Getting used to where the clutch takes up on that long pedal throw will be biggest challenge to me. I can see why some guys are removing the spring on the pedal for better feel. No clunking at all.

I just purchased a 2015 Mustang GT PP 50th anniversary last weekend and I also have the "thud."

I'm glad I read this whole thread because at first I thought it was wrong doing on my part since this is my first manual car but not the first time I've driven a manual. I thought I was not disengaging the clutch fully and it was driving me insane since I thought I could be harming the trans in my brand new car. I have the same issues such as going into 1st, 1-2 and 2-3 often making the thud. 2-3 seems to be the most often for me.

However based on what I know and additional research I'm fairly convinced it's the stock two piece drive shaft causing the noise.

A few things I've noticed is that even though the noise seems to be random in how often it occurs, it definitely occurs more often in track or sport mode than "normal" mode for me. The car is firmer in sport/track which makes sense to me as to why the driveshaft would cause more clunking in these modes. Also this noise is similar to noises that occur in previous years two piece drive shaft mustangs when you stiffen up the suspension and driveline, especially control arms. And that the noise went away when switching to a 1 piece driveshaft.

I've noticed in this thread that most have been told that the noise is not an issue by various ford dealers. Which would make sense if it was the driveshaft and not transmission. Plus it seems that it occurs most often in the more ridged performance packs than regular GT's.

I'm interested in knowing that if the this is still present after switching to a 1 piece driveshaft, in sure someone here has done it. It seems ford has made this mustang too ridged for a two piece drive shaft, which naturally has more slack than a 1 piece.

Does anyone have any reasons why they think it might not be the driveshaft? I'm really trying to figure this out because its too noticeable. Maybe it will be alright once I get exhaust lol

I don't own the S550 yet but I like the way you think when approaching these issues Walt.
You are not even the first to suspect the THUD noise or feel could be other drive train contributors. Keep working on it, the main concern is whether the THUD is really a problem or just unwanted NVH people are not accustomed to?
My old Torino Toploader, clutch,TB, and PP was a cacophony of NVH...lol.:eyebulge:

There have been a few people comment (maybe in this thread?) that changing to a one piece drive shaft did not get rid of the thud.

I suspect the sport/track vs. normal is in your head. Neither mode is any more 'firm' than the other; for the manual, all that changes between modes is steering response, throttle response and some traction control settings/limits.

Mine is going in to the shop tommorow night for them to check it out. I am pretty sure nothing will happen. Apparently the tech told the Service manager that he and I test drove another car on the lot and that it made the same noise. However, when I brought it in the fist time it was for a different noise, and we never went on that ride.

It's slop in the stock Axles more than anything else.
