Ive had my car for about 10 months love it. Ive always wondered and noticed no matter what ive done to the car (suspension wise) that when i bang a gear if I dont break a tire loose, it "thuds" in a shift. It's not violent, and you dont "feel" anything but just hear a "bang" or "thud"

Is this a normal thing or should i dig into why this is happening?

what's the point of trying to break your transmission?

if the diff hasn't been sleeved or properly bushing'd then it'll be banging about in it's freedom of motion and doing bad things to the axles and driveshaft and so forth. It may also be torquing the entire IRS subframe depending what you've done to the IRS.

Everything is fully braced in the back. The forward braces and the rear braces. Spherical toe bearings AND LCA spherical.

The only thing I can think of that is not trimming down the bumpstops enough?

The drive shaft/u-joint doesnt appear to be an issue.

I feel the run off dif slack is more than I would set it up with, but not crazy (as in not broken or damaged)

Not to be all doom and gloom, but my thud …

That’s a sheared diff bolt viewed from the now open end of the diff bush.

The car is driven enthusiastically but it’s not abused.

Check out this video to see just how much the diff moves around and the crap that bolt / bush / joint takes :

You can just see the rear right bolt above the ARB.

not relevant to the issue at hand. Or by 'everything' you mean you've dealt with the Diff? And locked out/replaced IRS bushings?

Would you get more benefit out of the bushing supports or the irs subframe braces? I see they also sell the bushing supports with the alignment kit so maybe that’s more of a benefit than just the subframe braces?

That I can’t answer sorry …

That video is to sell the the IRS bushing supports, but it shows clear movement in the diff bushes too - that’s the only reason I posted it.

I have the diff bushes and the IRS bushing supports in now and there is a clear difference in how the car feels. I have the braces too but they aren’t fitted yet - it will be interesting to see if I feel a further difference with those installed or if one (or the other) gives you 80% kind of thing.

Trouble is with the bad weather, it will be a while before it gets driven in anger again so maybe not a fair comparison.

if you have replaced the IRS bushings (eg. Whiteline kit or a truly effective lockout kit) then the bracing is probably no longer strictly necessary. ie. the usefulness of tying a now-"immobile" IRS cradle to the rest of the chassis is vanishing.

If you using the IRS bushing 'infills" the degree of freedom is very significantly reduced but not "zero". And the bracing then serves some purpose, I would hazard.

Admittedly I combined the Whiteline total-replacement bushing set AND the big IRS braces at first. When I was preparing to sell the car I took the braces off and the difference was slight.
