Major improvement with MT82 fluid change

I had no real issues with my MT82, it shifted fine but was a bit notchy, you could feel the gears bumping a bit between 1st and 2nd, and then 2nd to 3rd.

Changed the fluid and wow... smooth as butter. I did not expect so noticeable a difference, it is literally night and day. Tranny went from OK to OMG. Highly recommend taking the 30 minutes or so required to change your fluids, and the ~$50 cost is well worth it.

2cool, thanks for the above info, i've been lookin for a good fluid. My question is why go for the 75w-90 vs 75-140? just curious, i know little to nothing

Also, I know lots of guys do this stuff by themselves, and worst case i'll be at my property in 3 weeks, and can get it up on ramps. but could this be done at a dealership/oil service place? I'm trying to find a place to do the changes if I bring the mobil 1 and hopefully a mobil 1 filter. I figure if I could find a shop to do this and charge me labor, is it simple enough for me to bring this fluid and ask for this changed as well? :shrug:

Sorry for the dumb quetsions, never used any of this high grade material before, still new to it all.

I purchased three quarts of Royal Purple 01512 Synchromax and a Plews 55001 Lubrimatic fluid quart pump. I was under the car last weekend installing a FRPP clutch fluid line upgrade (what a pain that was :frusty. It looks like the MT-82 drain and fill plugs are relatively easy to get to. Ideally, I suppose you'd want to replenish the fluid with the car level since you have to check the fluid level by feeling inside the transmission at 1/2" below the fill hole. Questions to those who have done this themselves:

1. A local shop wants $48 to change transmission the fluid! That seems high to me. Can I do this myself with the front end elevated on ramps in my driveway or does it really need to be done on a lift?
2. What are the torque specs for the drain and fill plugs.

I personally prefer a lift it makes everything a lot easier. I just put in new fluid for my diff and trans, I went amsoil for both. I had trouble with the fill plug since all the wrenches and torx bit combination I had in my tool set were too big and the space available to get to the fill plug was too small. Luckily I found an allen wrench that fit perfectly and used that to get the fill plug out.

Torque specs for both are 26 ft/lb.

Do you remember what size wrench?

Best of luck! Also remember Ford can't tell you what fluid to use, only the specs they require. Same deal with engine oil, as long as the OEM specs are matched or exceeded you should be good.

Grimace, do you by chance know the exact specs for the transmission fluid? I'm thinking of using the ones OP posted, if that matches with the specs by ford. If not... well then shoot.

Hey ForTehNguyen, have you done this transmission fluid swap? I see some guys posting that the BG one is pretty good, but provides same notchiness as stock, when cold for the first 5-10 miles.

Also in your post you mentioned that this does match the same spec as required by Ford? I don't want to run into problems with the stealership trying to get out of fixing my car for any reason ya know? Sorry, just figuring out my next weekend mod. In the first page, a guy mentions using the Ford fluid, but RP seems to have better reviews, and then Amsoil seems to have great reviews too... so many decisions!

Thanks for that Grimace. Not a clue what any of it means but I appreciate it. I'm debating between amsoil and RP right now I think. I'm just incredibly indecisive and it's a daily struggle :lol:

When you google the spec listed a few fluids should pop up that say they are compatible. If you are unsure, you can always e-mail the manufacturer and ask if they meet the spec.

Yea, I'll probably follow what others have done, as long as their cars don't die I'll trust it.
Also reading about the "Coyote tick" and someone said it was due to an oil change/fluid change. Im hoping that my coyote holds strong.
My last question to you, if I get something to the same ford specs, but say it's RP. They can't deny my warranty because of that can they?

if it meets fords specs they dont have any basis to deny warranty. I even kept my original transmission fluid if I needed it.
