From the Owner's Manual - "Starting and Stopping Engine" section.

Sounds like once the engine is running, someone could drive off in the car with no FOB present in the car. But once the car is shutdown, it would need the FOB to be present to restart the car is more than 20 seconds went by after shutdown.

Fast Restart
The fast restart feature allows you to
restart the engine within 20 seconds of
switching it off, even if a valid key is not
present.

Within 20 seconds of switching the engine
off, press the brake pedal (automatic
transmission) or clutch pedal (manual
transmission) and press the button. After
20 seconds have expired, you can no
longer restart the engine without the key
present inside your vehicle.
Once the engine has started, it remains
running until you press the button, even if
the system does not detect a valid key.
If
you open and close a door while the engine
is running, the system searches for a valid
key. You cannot restart the engine if the
system does not detect a valid key within
20 seconds.

Yup, Explorers are the same way. Drop off the kids and wife at Target one Saturday, didn't realize I had no fob in my pocket, but car started because of the one always in my wife's purse. Dropped them off at Target, drove away to home depot. Then shut off car and the dash said "you have xx seconds to restart, no fob detected." panic sets in as you check the gas gauge :)

I wonder how soon or if you wont have key fobs at all and you would just use your fingerprint to unlock and lock the car?

I can see Ford using a TouchID sensor on the door handles similar to the new iPhones. Apple Pay, etc.... so easy and secure and convienant !!

It's too bad it doesn't have the keypad in the door like so many other vehicles. On our explorer, we use the door handle lock button often to lock the keys in the car on purpose. It's never a concern because the keypad on the door is right there to get back into the car. It is very handy if you know the car is going to be secure enough that it won't be broken into and you don't want to risk taking the key fob with you for fear of loosing or damaging it (because if you loose or damage it, bring your wallet to replace)
Id love to have that option, if there was a good way to integrate it into the lines of the car.
F150 has it on the door window surround. It looks good because you can't see it. Focus has it now, too.
