As most of you know, there's no good spot to place a jack on a s550.

I'm trying to decide between mounted rails and removable pads. Which do you prefer and why?

I like the rails (Steeda) because the pads were always difficult to position and keep track of. The rails have made it SO easy jacking the car up now. I just had my car on stands for 2 days while I was painting calipers and installing my new Steeda Bumpstops. I just rolled the jack to the middle of each side, jacked that side up, placed both stands at once, let it down and repeated on the other side, EZPZ lovin' it!

Pads, specifically zl1 pinch weld pads.
They add no weight and can be used anywhere .
Also, a jacking rail rules out the use of a spare tire and Jack kit.

I may not have given the pads the proper test. I used a knock-off instead of paying more for the ZL1s. Can you really place those anywhere along the pinch weld? What I found with the pads I bought was;

1) They could only be placed in a couple spots (normal jack points).
2) They were a little too thick. Sometimes my jack wouldn't make it under my 1" lowered car.
3) I had to get down, peek under the car and align the jack to the pad. More-so than just putting the lack under the rail.

The Zl1 pads can be placed anywhere along the pinch weld, they have very strong little magnets that hold them on as well as a "remove before flight" flag.
I actually forgot to remove one once, drove 70 miles round trip to work, and it was still stuck on there the next day.

I was contemplating jacking rails, but I already had 2 of the pads from my ST, so why bother.

I also got a low profile racing Jack, so clearance is not an issue.

Rails! I got the J&M one...good stuff, it's being used at least once a month.

The car being lowered pretty much rules out the use of the stock jack, so I carry my low profile one for long trips.

I have the steeds rails and can use a factory jack just fine.

I need to get one now too....

How so? My Steeda jacking rails do not impede use of the spare tire jack.

With that said, I also use the pinch weld adapters from ZL1 Addons. Great quality and they work very well.

I just installed rails a couple weeks ago and wonder now why I waited so long. I've been using pads for the last two years and love the rails.

Doesn't the factory jack straddle the pinch weld? Do the jack rails have clearance for that?
If so, I stand corrected.

The steedas are short enough to not impead the jack points .

I had mine up on a lift by the jack point when I installed my rails.

Do the rails change the crumple characteristics of the vehicle? Specifically, will they transfer force in low impact collisions that causes more damage (or damage to more parts) than without them?

I'm thinking about the old hood braces for C/K pickups that prevented the hood from folding while closing at the cost of creating a guillotine in a collision.
