Perhaps that is new with this model. On my 2010, it opens at any time. If I remember correctly, the system is designed so only a gas nozzle or the funnel can force the flap in the filler neck open. I believe there is a Ford locking gas cap part for those who want extra security.

Sometimes it doesn't even recognize the gas nozzle!



Every once in awhile it'll lock up when I'm trying to put gas in it..the silver stopper literally won't budge. I don't jam. It in there to make it work but I do have to insert it and take it out a few times before it'll let me in *shrug*.



Maybe its my car telling me to stop using shell gas ?

Easy Fuel® System
With this system, push to open the fuel door, insert the nozzle and begin
fueling. It is self-sealing and therefore protected against dust, dirt, water,
snow and ice. Wait 5–10 seconds from the time the refueling nozzle is shutoff
until you remove the nozzle from the vehicle to allow residual fuel in the
nozzle to drain into the tank. When using a portable fuel container, slowly
insert the fuel funnel (located in the spare tire compartment), and pour the
fuel into the funnel.
Note: Do not use aftermarket funnels as they will not work with the
Easy Fuel

It's in the trunk lift the cover for the spare and on the drivrers side you will see a black bracket with white in it . The white part slips out and is the funnel
