My oil pressure used to sit at about 20psi at idle and at most bounce to 60psi when I got on it. Recently it has been sitting idle at 30psi and trying to push past 100psi with about half throttle. I did an oil change recently and it didn't make the issue much better. Anyone know why this is happening or any suggestions on what to check?

First assuming you replaced the oil with the same viscosity grade as before, and checked the level?

IF so, the next thing to consider is engine temperature. As you know it takes time for the oil to warm, and as it does your oil pressure will drop as it warms.

When testing oil pressure, we have to consider the RPM of the engine. The easy way to test this is without scanners is using two easily identifiable RPM data points, fully warmed at idle, and fully warmed at WOT.

In a perfect world I'd like the atmospheric conditions to be the same, as ambient temps will impact how long it takes to get "fully warm". Same thing, with the viscosity, different viscosities will warm at different rates.

I'd like to know if the FSM specifies the oil pressure PSIs at different RPMS, anyone know?

My numbers have always been ~100psi at cold startup, warm idle at 25psi, and back to 100psi with a lot of RPM. That was with the initial fill and current fill (M1 5w30)and the FL500S oil filter. I'm pretty happy with the way the car is running, maybe you don't have a problem? (Or maybe we both have a problem...)

My PSIs are the same, or at least very close. On the factory oil fill.

Is the indicated oil pressure a function of an algorithm, or is it an indication from a oil pressure sensor on these cars? My bet is that it is from an algorithm.

I am sure the more knowledgeable will be here soon.

What is the worry here, I'm dumbfounded to see a reason for the concern.

You have a variable pressure pump, so the values will be all over the place. But none of those seem out of whack so not sure why you're worried here. There doesn't seem to be any issue.

You have a brand new car, go drive it. If any real issues pop up, you have 5 years of engine warranty left.

Just warm the car up before you get on it. It's only extremely high while it's cold. I noticed my launch control doesn't turn on until the oil reaches proper temps. Otherwise, don't bother looking at the oil PSI and nothing to worry about.

I've posted this before in other similar threads... here's a recap.

Oil PSI will change or "peg" based on multiple conditions.

High oil psi upon initial startup is normal in every vehicle. The oil viscosity is thicker due to it sitting and dependent upon exterior seasonal temps (whether in a a garage or not). The colder the engine block, the thicker the oil will be, then as it warms up viscosity changes (thins out).

Oil PSI in ANY engine is always dependent upon operating temps, oil viscosity and RPM.

The oil psi specs below is for a bone stock S550 Coyote 5.0 right from Ford:

That PSI info is also based upon the standard recommended oil for the 5.0 Coyote.

IMO, Ford should have designed the oil psi gauge with better increments.

Is the oil pressure gauge indicating pressure based on an electric sensor, or is it an algorithm-based display?
