I guess I can answer the question as to how a $80ish midrange stacks up against a $5ish midrange.. No comparison... And more of a dramatic difference than I was expecting. The level of clarity and dynamics was immediate with the Morel mids and very revealing. I bought the Morel’s open box at Crutchfield for $120 for the pair and I am very impressed. Teamed up with the Morel Ultra 602 components it’s such a great soundstage. It was a big jump in sound quality. This problem with audio and budgets as I am pretty sure a $200-300 Scan Speak or $500ish Audio Frog mid range speaker would be a big jump over the Morel’s but I am going to be satisfied with what I have.
Something else I learned in a 3 way active setup is how critical that midrange speaker is. It can make or break you. I spent some time adjusting crossovers and then eliminating the midrange completely and using a traditional 2 way setup with tweeter, woofer, and subs. It sounds good, but adding the midrange in and setting the crossovers made a dynamic leap I terms of clarity, sound, and imaging. Sometimes less is more, but in these cars I think a 3 way setup makes a big leap vs a 2 way. You have to try it for yourself to experience it. I also spend some time and dialed in all the time delays which has resulted in a very great sound stage from the drivers seat. I am going to create a few different profiles on the DSr1 to account for when I have passengers as well so I can adjust time delay depending on how’s in the car and preferences. Then I can just flip profiles from my phone.
But it’s about the budget and 3 way active is just much more expensive.
For transparency I spent:
$440 on the 3 way and sub drivers
$140 on amps
$203 on DSP and $30 on the harness
$160 roughly on all the sound deadening, cables, zip ties, tape, power and ground distribution, etc.
Grand total = $970ish
Obviously all the labor was all me.
Some pics GSR vs Morel.. Morel is the tiny guy that packs a punch
