Posting this for anyone doing this on their Mach 1 in the future. When installing the Ford Performance X pipe follow the LMR procedure on YouTube and cut it just under 5 inches. FP instructions say 4 inches which is what I did and it pushes the exhaust tips too far out beyond the diffuser. I had to go back and cut another 1” off to get the tips back into the diffuser where they look factory again. I’ve installed a few cat backs and intermediate pipes in my day, and this is the first one I’ve ever done where the new piece isn’t designed to slide over the oem exhaust. So length is important as there is very little adjustment in the pipes available. The “true seal” band clamps are all that hold the exhaust together.

So measure 5” from the weld and cut just under there. Tips will be right where they should be after installation is complete.

I like the tips to be about an inch past the diffuser. This helps get rid of drone.

When I say flush I mean flush when looking down from the top. Not flush from the side. Your tips stick out 1” beyond the top of the diffuser???

Yep. That's what it took to kill the drone. I think it looks good too.

I guess to each their own. I hated the tips being pushed out because you could see the foldover from the tips sticking out beyond the side of the diffuser. Didn’t look right to me. I wanted the factory look again.

Yea, we all like what we like. I have 4 inch tips and they look good stuck out about an inch. I liked them flush too but hate drone.

I typically factor in the over all length expansion at full operating temperature. 304 SS grows a considerable amount from when cold. 409 SS not as much.
Set a 304 SS system flush or a touch past at ambient temperature.

The AE exhaust loom is also a consideration for these kind of discussions - on some cars an inch would be too much … :frown:

304 SS will grow an inch or more in length especially when pouring the coals to it.
Is the factory exhaust 304? The FP X pipe is 409 supposedly.
