I like this view for seeing hands and track:

I've been using racechrono and you can start your go pro from that app directly. I've also picked up an obdii device to get more information from the vehicle such as throttle position and more accurate speed.

@Biggsy @tosha I just looked at my TrackAddict settings on my phone and the GPS input was set to XGPS160 rather than standard....I wonder if that was messing with my data; looking for the unit when it wasn't there. I'll have to try it again on Standard and see if it improves.

liked your video chasing Elantra N on DDT 😄 :like: . haven't seen any videos on your channel from CTMP GP circuit, are you driving on it? what's your PB there?

That was a bad day for someone :( I actually finally took delivery of an Elantra N line last November (after waiting 9 months) as a daily.
.

I have done GP, but only once and it was my first lapping day with the car. I'd like to get back there some day. I'm taking a break from lapping this season as we have had some other priorities that pushed this off of the budget this year. Nothing to write home about lap time wise (car was stock then and still is very stock compared to most hpde guys):

in my experience, built-in phone GPS units are just not fast enough if you want accurate data. doesn't matter whether it's android or iphone, it's a hardware limitation, regular phone GPS does not require that level of accuracy. XGPS160 and any similar race GPS (Aim Solo, Garmin Catalyst and etc) are all 10Hz, giving 10 positioning data points per second versus 1-second or something samples based on in-phone GPS. you should not be seeing things like this with a good external GPS unit:

that's funny, I also got one for myself as daily car just recently, it's super fun. Also hoping to use it for some track days and bring down the cost of this hobby by a bit.

did he actually crash it or was it just a spinout on the grass?

Completely agree, but in my experience, when I had an Android phone running TrackAddicts, my GPS data was fine. I had no issues, delays, inaccuracies. I then switched to iPhone and the GPS data is horribly inaccurate but like I said, I noticed it was set to XGPS160 rather than Standard so I think it's worth seeing if that alone will get me sufficient data before buying the XGPS160 unit.

for sure, you should try tweaking the settings first))). the screenshots I shared are from android Samsung top of the line model. all the app settings were correct, however accuracy was a complete mess, as you can see. I couldn't trust any lap times with this. more importantly for me, there was no reliable way to look at how I enter and exit corners, how different lines and entry speeds affect things, where I have biggest opportunities to improve and etc.

you probably had a different phone which worked better. just saying that don't expect miracles with in-built GPS. 😊.

note for transparency - I never tried xgps160, cannot say how exactly it compares to phone only solution, on paper it looks very solid option though

While I totally agree 1hz phone GPS is not optimal, moving my phone from my pocket to my windshield resolved the issue you're showing here.

You must have the full N, I don't think a N line would hold up on track.

Yes he hit the inside wall. Damage to the bumper hood and front quarter. I suspect more hidden damage as well.

There may be an issue that Tosha is in the middle of BFE in Ontario. Maybe, the middle of BFE in CA might have better satellite coverage? That wouldn't explain the difference phone to phone, but I've never really seen GPS info as bad as what Tosha is seeing. It's either that or his line is absolute garbage.

they are still under $1200 a set for 295/19 size. They won't win you any time attack events but they will help you become a better driver.
I remember you inquiring about the Kuhmo v730 last year I think and just an FYI Simple store has them for $310/tire before promo code. Just got to the shop and will put them on this weekend. Will see what my event next weekend brings.

hahah, I might have taken a forest trailrun shortcut, that would explain some excessive debris on track

mine was attached to windshield. you guys are probably right and it could be issue specific to my device, or as @TeeLew is suggesting, some bad GPS coverage. that actually makes me curious to try it out with a different phone later this year.

yes, I got full N. it skipped my attention that yours is N-Line when I was reading your post.

I'm also in Ontario and run in the same areas. This is right next door to where his shot was.

So, clearly, enough satellite coverage is available. Is there any way to record how many satellites it's seeing in the moment? You should probably have the phone in a window, but better yet would be to use the car GPS in the roof or a magnetic roof mount antenna.

I'll give it another test in April at GP track with a different phone and will share results.

One guess that comes to mind is that a combination of elevation changes and high speeds at Mosport GP make less accurate phone GPS's go crazy, or it's just my device being glitchy.

In either case, I should be able to test Garmin Catalyst vs Android Samsung phone with trackaddict side by side on that particular track, both mounted to windshield. Should be interesting )))
