Bump Start not recommended

I tried it this morning (in my steeply sloped driveway, in reverse). Turned the "ignition" to the "accessory" position (hit the start button with my feet flat on the floor, car was in gear), and got two messages from the computer, the first one is to "press clutch to start", and the second was "vehicle in run mode".

So I let the car roll, and let the clutch out (once I had a little bit of speed). Not only did the car not start (after the engine had plenty of opportunity to crank), but when I did hit the start button on my street (once I had rolled out into the street), it cranked for a LOOONG time :eyebulge:I'm guessing the Ecoboost doesn't like bump starts...

Be Careful with the Start Buttom....

yesterday while driving I reach to get my sunglasses at the small pocket in from of the shifter, and touch the start buttom.
To my surprise it shut off my engine.
It can cause an accident! Now I'm more aware to avoid that area while driving....

Yep. I usually lay my phone diagonally over the start button. I do hit the hazard lights often when reaching for A/C.

usually most push button starts require a 3-5 sec press to shut off the car while not in park. Thats not the case with this car?

I always wondered what would happen and never did try it. If you go onto the NHTSA site you can see complaints about it. According to the information i read they're is no fix for it at this time and I don't believe its even under investigation.

There are instances where a car needs to be able to be shut off while driving so there really isn't anything that can be done. Most push button cars can be shut off while driving. There was another thread on here that beat this to death a few weeks ago if you want more info.

Manual cars just push clutch in and push button to restart. Automatics go into Neutral and push start button.

A few days ago I started thinking about what would happen had I pressed the ignition button while in motion. Since the damn button is just right there and sometimes it’s tempting to want to press the button I thought to myself I will do it in a residential area where there is no one around and I am close to home. Well I called my doctor to let him know I may be in an accident. I accelerated to around 20mpg in 2nd gear, turned the radio off, and the nervousness got to me. I hit the button and I got ejected out of my seat. Luckily I think Ford was smart enough to know that the button is near all the other buttons and if pressed while going will not shut the car off. Maybe it’s different for automatics.

Nope, it shuts down with just one tap. But I am stopped. Maybe I will try it in motion.

it says in the manual when you are in motion it will require a long press not just a tap

That makes sense so an inadvertent "bump" of the start button at 70 MPH doesn't shut down the engine.

I accidentally did this on the Parkway coming back from Nashville last week, freeked me out. I have an automatic and believe I just barely tapped it "flicking" the temperature down degree.
After reading these threads and opinions, I'm not questioning the function so much , but the location maybe??

I guess you need one of the button guards that people are selling. There has been a thread on those on this site. Kinda like the cover over the fire control button on a jet fighter.
