I went to do a pull, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, upcoming red light so I slowed down, downshifted into 2nd but got locked out so I missed it. I stop and smoke starts coming up (light amount of smoke) from the front of the car. I put it in first, it doesn’t go, I put it in second, it doesn’t go.

Put it in Neutral and rolled to the side of the road. Plugged in my scanner and got Crankshaft positioning sensor codes. What do I need to know about these codes? I’m towing the car back home, can i fix it in my driveway or do I need to send it to Ford?

It's on the back of the engine. I don't know if you can get to it with the IM on but I'd think it is easier to get to if you take it off. Should be able to do it in the driveway.

Smoke and a bad sensor don't generally go together. Any mods? Is the engine oil level correct? Any banging, knocking, clicking, noises?

Just looked at some diagrams online and I should be able to get to it if I take out the battery box. I just hope my timing isn’t off.

This. Hopefully not a CS issue. Pull the intake as stated above. Easy to replace, never heard of one going bad tho...

Kind of sounds like the crank sensors a victim here. Could you get it into gear with the engine off? Would it hold the car from moving if so? Nothing trans related is impacted by the crank sensor. At least not physically.

I wonder if the smoke you saw is a failed rear main seal that leaked oil onto the engine? I installed one on mine recently when I had the clutch and tranny out of the car. As @K4fxd said, removing the IM would allow you to replace the CS in the driveway.

If the rear main seal sprung a leak, it can still be done in the driveway, but the tranny and clutch will have to come out to remove and replace the seal.

I should add that if you have an MMR Head Cooling Mod, it won’t allow you to remove the CS. The MMR standoff will need to be removed from the head first.

No knocking, banging, or clicking at all. Just misfire. The smoke is probably from the clutch or high flow cats getting hot. Oil level is still good!

Mods: Intake, Headers, Exhaust, Tune.

Yeah I was able to get it into gear. But every time I release clutch slowly it would stall

Alright, those who know and aren’t speculating, how does it look? It has metal shaving on the crankshaft sensor (Yes I’ve grinded a gear or two in the past) Are these shaving normal wear and tear or something worse?

Something letting go in the clutch is very likely, based on the issues you describe (getting into gear and the engine dying when you slowly release the clutch). If not that, perhaps a broken tooth on the flywheel or crank trigger wheel.

Tranny is definitely going to have to come out now for sure to get to the bottom of it. I don’t see any other way around it.
