Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on the S550

1973 is my birth year.. Coastie from 1991 to 1994 (last budget cuts) then got into the Seabees in 1994 october (5 mo break) and been in since.. retired March 1 2014 a CM

I was in NMCB 22
I don't mind backup cameras actually comes in handy in occasions... just never had them before but I know they are cool

I'd love to have retired reasonably, but got hurt and that was that... medically retired in Jan. 1992. Long story short... still pissed off enough I don't like to discuss it. One of my brothers retired from the ARMY... TWICE! That's a cool story, for another time...

The camera is a great thing to have, really. I can't turn my head well, so it's hard for me to look back even with a good view. With the camera, I can see things fine as long as it's not raining(haven't driven it in snow).

Wow, it's rare to find complaints about DRLs these days.

We tend to like the option overall, but an off/on switch isn't asking too much. Even if they were off only when not moving... would be a help.

Granted, this has no bearing on your guy's request to have an 'off' switch, which is completely reasonable imo. My 335i's DRLs have an off switch in one of the iDrive's menus. Wonder if MFT will have something similar

Right... I just went to see if I can shut mine off(about 5hrs ago) and no... no computerized method I could find... your pic gave me the idea though, thanks. There are options for several things, but not that simple little thing... :tsk:

Ha Ha I rock those LEDS at dusk...gets tons of attention I might add.

People do like 'em, for sure! Even the ones on my Escape get compliments... but it'd be better still if we could turn 'em off...

Pretty sure your car running generates enough noise without the minimal light that LED DRLs shine (They don't diffuse like regular lights, FYI, they're pretty much directional. They're there to make you seen by oncoming vehicles or so that vehicles can see you approaching from the rearview mirror, not so you can see better) that your argument about not announcing your presence is a moot point (especially if the videos from Goodwood are anything to go by). It's fine if that's what you want, and I totally agree with what you're saying that you should be able to choose for your own privacy, but your logic is a bit flawed by engine noise.

They're not hearing my factory stock Ford Escape sitting at idle... I can hardly hear it from any distance over 10' myself.

Besides, if I sit at my beach area, there's only 1 home within 100' of my dock(including my own), which was built in 2002, about 50' off their beach area. My own home is easily 300' away and nobody is hearing any normal vehicle from that far. On the other border, is the small public beach(like 10 parking spaces), which closes at sunset daily, so I don't get much noise after dark out here. Ultimately, if the lights weren't on, as was the case with my Explorer, people wouldn't even know I was there after dark.

I started driving with my headlights on after living in the southwest deserts for a while. Sometimes the only way I could tell a car was coming at me or coming up from behind me through the "mirages" on the roadway was because they had their lights on during the day. I figured I could return the favor. A few hundred extra yards of visibility is worth it to me to avoid a possible accident.

As I said earlier, running the lights is the drivers prerogative and those properly trained will know when using headlamps is the right decision. I just don't think it should be up to the government to decide for us... it adds cost, period.

Plus, the 2015's look awesome. It's one of the few extra safety features I actually like because of the styling they add.

Enjoy your lake though. Hopefully the minor detail of the DRLs doesn't put a damper on your fun.

It really isn't about fun... ya can't really see them from inside the cabin during daylight hours, so it's not like they're a problem. Simply enough, for me it's only a matter of being old enough to remember when we didn't need our government or an automaker to think for us and believing that it's not a great idea to raise the cost of all vehicles just to satisfy the whims of a few.

If y'all don't like DRL then there is a simple solution..... the last time I checked there is a fuse you can pull in your fuse panel. Most DRL that I have ever seen run on an isolated system but that was on older cars... like 2001 - 2006. I am sure many things have gotten a bit more complicated with the Newer drl tied into the directional blinker system...... just a thought

Having your lights on at all times, even in the day time, is far safer than not having them on. So maybe thought's like this are stupid because ideally you should always have your lights on Personally it doesn't matter to me because I turn my lights on no matter what for the most part. But I agree it would be nice if you can turn off your lights, lets say approaching someones house late at night and you don't want to wake them up because you're coming home late. Stuff like that but to say someone is stupid to want DRL's is a little dumb in itself. Maybe he doesn't want to have to flip the switch on, however easy that might be. It only makes sense to have a switch position for them come on automatically. Now that's only in the case of DRL's being your headlights as well. However like i said there should be an off switch.

That wasn't the point but there are pretty stupid people around .. I am for the DRL which I drive with my headlights on most all times... at work already at 4am anyways....lol... problem is there were or maybe still is people that have their headlights off but as a initiation... you flash lights at them could get you in a world of trouble so usually I don't bother with them at all... I let them be rather encounter this kind of trouble.... I have auto lights but I don't use them at all

There is a switch to turn them off, so I'm not sure where the issue is. The switch is called the e-brake. If you're too stupid to know how to use the e-brake, you're too stupid to be driving.

It should satisfy the people bitching about the DRLs giving their location away when parking at night though.

I vaguely remember reading that the e-brake would turn off the DRLs back when the '13s first came out but I'd honestly forgotten about it.

I think some are by the ignition switch... not really sure... guess it varies from manufacturer

The point is, many cars have the ability to turn off the DRLs when stationary, which is what most of the complaints seem to be around. Let's wait to see if the '15 MY has this as well.

I'm curious though, does the '14 MY have DRLs?
