Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) on the S550

If you ask me there should be 5 settings Automatic, Off, Fog, DRL, On...

That's what my GC had. And I believe Mustang will have something similar.

I think DRLs might be required by law these days. I live in a mountainous, forested area, and running with headlights on all the time is pretty much required in order to be seen in all the shadows. What bugs me about DRLs is that they only apply to the front lights. I would actually like them to apply to the rears as well. For this reason I end up ignoring the DRLs anyway and just turning on the headlights all the time. My 350z is 10 years old with 180000 miles, and the lights haven't burned out yet. I don't think that is going to be an issue.

Personally, I hope they're not ever to be required... just another waste of money on account a... someone stupid thinks other people are too stupid... This concern is ALL in being taught how to drive in the correct way and nothing more.

As for the burnout concerns... crashes happen, period. Those lights will be extremely expensive, guaranteed. Of course, yours haven't burned out in 10yrs... then again, you also just said that you burn your headlights, so they'd be off... ;)

I agree with the shadows being a problem while in forested areas... light comes through, but not everywhere and it makes seeing oncoming traffic difficult. That said, as you do, people should be taught to turn on their headlights in such areas. Mine are set to come on if I go under even a bank overhead in broad Florida sunshine... If they don't, that's okay because Ford provided me these handy dandy DRL's... :tsk: I truly don't mind them in general. If I wanna sit near the lake and just relax though, listening to the radio and/or using A/C... I don't want those damned lights on w/o being able to shut them off! So far, I'm not aware of an off switch for them... then again, I haven't looked. :shrug:

Actually DRL's are mandatory in the entire EU on all newly introduced models as of 2011.

Yet not required in USA(at least not all of it), where Ford is making them standard on darned near everything they build...

Reminds me a bit of the 3rd brake lamp law of 1993. Until december 31 1992 3rd brake lights were forbidden here, as of january 1993 they all of a sudden became mandatory.

LOL! I remember going from 2 to 3 tail lights in 1986... Most cars looked HORRIBLE with the 3rd light! The body styles weren't being updated in most cases and manufacturers were left with simply making something work... and it showed!

Odd that USA required the 3rd brake like 1st and the EU is requiring the DRL's 1st(unless they really are required here). You'd think there would be things all governments in developed nations could agree on, like safety features on vehicles... guess not though...

For the daytime running lamps.... now, as they call them signature lights really did not kick off until audi showed off their LED signature lamps, that made all their sedans look so cool then shortly after, the rest of the auto makers started doing similar designs or their own spin off these lights. Personally, I think they are cool but like the originality of design of the DRL or signature.. it's not new here....GM has had them on many of their trucks which occasionally were burned out on the right side.Lol
On a safety aspect, I like them... the visibility is there esp when you have a pedestrian walking...crossing... they can see these lamps esp the signature lamps... hopefully the driver sees... you...

They also were, as are most GM's today(changing, thanks to Audi), simply a power supply causing the high beams to burn @ 70% whenever the vehicle is in a forward(and maybe reverse) gear.

I have a buddy with a passion for a new Silverado every 2yrs. He got a 2004 and I almost instantly noted 1 light out. He told me that GM made it that way and that 1 light will burn for a trip, then the other... I never thought much of it... I just laughed and called that a stupid idea. :headbonk: One day I told my brother(a long time auto electric guy) about that and he laughed, then told me that they have issues, mostly with heat and the bulbs and connection get so hot that the connector melts... that's really common apparently, because we see it all the time.

The Audi lights are the very ones that came to mind when I said I like the Mustang version better than most... but not Audi! Those cars just look like they're either giving you a wink or an evil grin...

Safety is fine, but seriously... people should be trained properly before being handed over a vehicle... clearly they're not anymore. On that note: I am a firm believer than NOBODY in America should be granted a driver license unless and until that pass the CDL Class A test and actually drive a big truck a few hundred miles. That would teach some respect on the roads as well as courtesy and it would provoke thought before action when behind the wheel.

Does your S/N come from your NAVY experience? I'm guessing, since I know what a SEABEE is ... I was an OS(when they still had those). Before joining, I was in the parts world and when I got out, I got into parts again because I couldn't get a job as an ATC ... and that spread into repair which led to race cars and that, to racing... so I drove to tracks to sell stuff and race cars(never the driver) and decided to renew my A license which had been turned into a D in 1992(federal law crap) and then I wanted out of all the "stuff" so I took a job driving and stayed at it for 5 long yrs... then went back into parts and have since... RETARDED... er... yeah... whatever.

GM problems... DRL's are a small issue! :lol: I haven't even paid attention to those on the F-series. In general, I don't really like them because they're always on and that bugs me as a wasteful habit. That said, many look great on various vehicles... just need a switch! :frusty:

That's one thing I wish my car had. I have no idea why Ford wouldn't offer it on their halo Mustang, but they never did. I'm thinking about getting a Sync Lockpick setup from Coastaltech just to get a backup camera.

1973 is my birth year.. Coastie from 1991 to 1994 (last budget cuts) then got into the Seabees in 1994 october (5 mo break) and been in since.. retired March 1 2014 a CM

If you run your lights all the time, that's your prerogative. Why should everyone suffer added cost to their vehicle for something they cannot even see? I have them and still think they should, if not be a choice to have regardless the model, at least have an OFF position! There are times they're just not needed. Like I said... if I want to sit at the lake behind my home w/ the engine running for A/C, I don't want to have anyone being nosy about my presence. If my lights can be turned off, most people cannot see me. It's MY YARD, so why should I have to announce my own presence if I don't want to do that? The pickup truck drivers could see you... much further away than other car drivers because they sit up high.

My gti's daytime running lights can't turn off while driving but they will turn off if the e-brake is engaged. I actually normally turn my lights on during the day anyhow. Might be due to the fact I have worked midnights for a long time and it's just habit now but i also like being more visible during the day time as well. Would be nice to have an off switch though

The DRLs in my Jetta turn off when I set the emergency brake. Is that not going to happen in the Mustang?

When moving, I have no problem with them being mandatory.

I'm personally a huge fan of LED running lights and believe that they serve an integral role in shaping a car's identity on the road, especially when it gets dark. I do think that certain examples are deserving of criticism, like the first round of Christmas tree-esque Audi offerings, or the meager efforts seen from other OEMs. Ford did a fantastic job with the S550; the evenly diffused tubes look tasteful and add rather than distract.

For what it's worth, DRLs have been mandatory in the EU since 2011. Because DRLs require power from the engine, they do have a tangible effect on fuel economy. The easiest solution for OEMs is switching to LEDs to optimize efficiency.

Granted, this has no bearing on your guy's request to have an 'off' switch, which is completely reasonable imo. My 335i's DRLs have an off switch in one of the iDrive's menus. Wonder if MFT will have something similar.

but you see.... that is exactly the point of DRL is to distract or get attention... quite honestly, Audi has one of the most tasteful or elegant styles of DRL. Audi was the first to get the LED ones here in the states... Heck, there were commercials about that and comparing to the Mercedes and the other brands as not having them then all of a sudden, everyone had to get them... aftermarket stuff has gone awry with it. The 2016 Audi TT is getting the halo lamp signatures in the front and rear as well as sequential turn lamps.

I like the mustangs DRLs... It was a very tasteful application of those lamps as well as the 2014 Mustang as well. There is a form of originality to it at least instead of wrapping the headlights copying Audi and I applaud Ford for doing that. Next F150 also get the Halo DRLs that are incorporated into the amber turn signals and wraps along the outter edges... I think the rears do too. amber and red respectively.

It would really be cool if there was a halo lamp that accentuates the the design of the rear lights... Just my opinion
