Hey all! I own a 2019 Mustang GT that I daily. I have been on the fence about supercharger specifically ESS. I have gone through the ESS thread and even the Facebook group to gain as much knowledge about this setup.

I would go with ESS G3 120mm on 93 octane which should put me around 650-680 rwhp.

However, 2 things are holding me back so I am hoping someone can guide me:

1)Stock cats: I live in emissions state so would prefer to not run a catless set up. I have a corsa catback so would like to avoid to doing LTH as well due to noise.
  • How common is cats melting with boost?
  • If the risk is high, do we get some sort of warning or by the time you get P0420/0430 it is too late and your motor will die.
2)Tires: It seems like everyone swears by Nitto R2 for daily with boost. How is Michelin Pilot Sport 4s? Anyone has any experience with summer tire that is not a drag radial? While Nitto does ok in the rain it seems like Michelin would be much better
  • Could I floor it in 2nd and be fine or maybe slight modulation of throttle when running a summer tire like Michelin?
  • Would first 3 gears pretty much be useless on a summer tire unless I run Drag radials like Nittos R2 or MT S/S?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Not sure about question 1. I am allergic to cats.

For tires, the 4s will do okay once it’s hot out and the tire is warm. It’s going to struggle when the boost hits and temps are mild or cold. For reference, I was spinning at the top of 3rd gear (100+mph) on 4s tires when temps were around 50*. Was scary enough to go home and buy ET streets which would suck for a daily in Maryland.

Would 2nd gear be fine in spring/summer time at least?

Like you said I would not want to daily ET S/S or even Nitto R2 due to rain. I could get a cheap beater for winter but would still have to deal with rain on drag radial which I have heard can be sketchy.

The 4s is a great tire. I’d imagine you should be okay for rolls in summer temps.

Cats might be safe if you're not doing long pulls

You will be pedaling it in second gear on PS4S. Depends on the rest of your suspension etc. you can't just whack the throttle open you will have to learn to roll into it.

I've been doing it for six years and love it. I'm sure around town mileage suffers a bit but who cares.

I have pretty much the same ESS setup on my Bullitt and went through the tire selection process the hard way, buy trial and error...as I live in central FL summer tires are year around tires ...I ended up with Cup2s in 305 & 315s on 10.5 & 11 GT350 wheels, this setup handles the power well in 2nd in "sport+" however in "track" you can still easily break traction if you "manhandle" the throttle, all in all driver retraining is the key to it...OBTW my car has a "Full Steeda" chassis setup which I feel is necessary to handle the additional power competently...Good luck with your choice.

This is a concept that is foreign to a lot of people. It's not an on/off switch, which is evident by the swarms of people preaching getting a centri vs PD because "the instant torque will just blow off the wheels".

I grew up in the country with tons of dirt roads. If you wanna spin, you stab it. Same goes with snow.

And that's why I'm comfortable running with TC off all the time. I think it's healthy to know how much traction and control you have rather than always relying on the computer. At the same time, I've made a lot of errors in life behind the wheel - but that's how we learn.

Yes even with my current setup I tend to roll into even though tires can handle it. 2nd gear pulls are fine but I am still N/A so that is expected. I rarely take the TC off.

Looks like tires should be fine with a sticky summer tire and some throttle control.

What seems to be the consensus with Cats? I would love to keep stock cats/headers and not have to deal with emissions issues

I daily boosted car around 700 rwhp and occasionally I’ll pulley down and e85 every so often with no issues but also allergy to cats. I do daily on Atturo AZ850. Rain or shine hasn’t given me any issues and I can usually dead hook 40 rolls. Been through several sets so far so I plan to keep using Atturo for daily and get a drag pack if I want to have fun.

You use their AZ850R or just AZ850? Seems to me that tires won't be a problem.

I have to make friends with some emissions guys haha

Regular all summer tire AZ850. Not the DR version.

Pretty good answer's here. But I'll add to it.

I daily my boosted GT on 93, and it's fine. Sometimes it feels like over kill for a morning shit traffic commute to work.

I really only hate when I get off work and want a quiet ride home to relax. But instead my car sounds like its waging war on every minivan I come across at the stoplight.

Even when I take off super slowly....it still sounds like its trying to race the living snot out of everyone.🤣

-Still on my stock cats. No issues from what I can tell.

Are you gonna destroy your cats doing daily driving? Probably not. Long pulls or frequent pulls could definitely shorten their life. But the casual pull from time to time your probably fine. Tuners can add some "cat protection" to help cool the cats down some. (I think the method essentially is adding more fuel to reduce cat temps or something)
