I ran the cabin A/C for a few minutes before activating the seat cooling. Turning the seat cooling to max chilled the seat bottom, and gently cooled the lower part of the seat back. But I did feel any noticeable cooling in the upper half of the seat back. At least the perforations in the upper portion allowed some air movement.
I think that cooling in the lumbar area is coming from the seat bottom some how. There's nothing in the seat back to cool that low looking at the diagram. It should be cooling towards the middle/upper back where the duct is focused, then a little spread throughout those perforations.

Really sucks that the seat back isn't working. I didn't notice any issues when I did my test drive before ordering but it wasn't for that long. Really hope they at least put out a message they are aware of the problem and working on it. A little transparency would go a long way. Luckily, one of my friends is studying to become a mechanical engineer and loves to tinker. Maybe I can convince him to look at it and figure something out once I get my vehicle.

I think we will have to be persistent on this one. Letting Ford know by email every month if you have taken yours in would be a good start.

Taking mine in on Monday and I will have them look at mine. I am sure I will get the "working as designed" response but I will press the issue and ask that it be reported to Ford.

I guess technically it is "working as designed" because it's designed not to work!

If I can leave work a bit early today, I'm stopping by mine to discuss the issue. Going to test cooling on a couple of other cars too if I can.

I'm double posting since we have 2 threads going but I literally just got off the phone with the Regional Ford Service Manager for my area. He told me that Ford is aware of the problem and is working on a fix. He also mentioned that there are 2 separate problems. One where the seat back cooling is just insufficient due to the design, the other is, as many people have mentioned here, the seatbacks are actually heating when cooling is turned on.

I don't have the problem where it is heating but I genuinely hope Ford fixes that problem first for you all experiencing that. In that case you can't even use the cooling on the seat bottom!

This doesn't mean don't take it to the dealer. Still take it in to register the complaint. That way when the TSB is issued you should still be able to get it covered under warranty when Ford creates the fix. In the mean time, we just need to watch for the TSB. Is there a better place to see those other than myford.com?

^^^ jbailer - good info on getting info that Ford is aware and working on a fix! I think they have too, as too many people are noticing this problem.

I would not place much stock in a regional rep making a statement like that. If the statement were made by the Ford Engineering department, I would find it more believable.

Not trying to be a "Debbie downer" but, right now "Working as designed." seems to be the universal answer.

This has been an on-going discussion I've had with him for a couple weeks. He called me today after finally getting word from the engineers exactly what he told me above. He was waiting to get the information from them.

I talked to my local dealer today, and he definitely agreed that the seat back on mine was not cooling efficiently, and could even feel it was getting a bit warm.

He wanted me to drop off the car so they would disassemble to fix it. I opted not to, as getting a new unit there likely won't fix the issue until there's a design change.

Thanks for sharing. Sure hope this is the case and they are aware and working on it. They are probably copying DroidJunky's design as we speak. They should send him a check when this is all over someday.
