I changed my oil yesterday- my car has only 2785 miles and I owned it 4 months. The reason I changed it is that I am leaving for a long road trip and will put on about 1700 miles on the car over next weekend. I would not get a chance to change it for another 2 weeks if I did not change it now. The meter said it has 67% life left. I always like to do the first oil change on a new sooner than what is recommended. The oil that came out looked clean but my other reason for changing it was that it was down a quart. Did I change it too soon?

I would say yes, you did change it too soon especially based on the color of it. There was still a lot of life left in that oil. Your engine is barely broken in.

How odd;

Why worry or even think about it now?

I do my first change on all my cars at 3,000 miles so I don't see a big deal. Some folks do the first one even earlier.

1) Color means nothing. Change the oil on a diesel, run it a few hours, it'll be tar black.
2) The owners manual recommends what, 7500 miles? I would have personally changed it after the road trip.
3) if its low on oil, add a quart, not 10.

That said, you haven't likely caused any issues. The dealership changed my cars at 400 miles because it was traded in...

If it isn't ticking like a BBQ igniter then no harm no foul.

My first oil change was whenever the oil life meter said it was time to change it.

I did that as well my oil looked like gunk. I now change it at 30% left.

Mine looked like new, but I do drive 90% long haul (3-6hr) highway miles. Other than that it sits in the garage.

You can't judge oil on appearance
