Good question I wondered the same as mine has it and I LOVE using it. My guess is yes, that it is required to use the brake lights when it's actually apply the brake and not just coasting to a slower speed. That would be quite dangerous not using them. When someone cuts in front of you with adaptive on it can sometimes get aggressive with slowing down by using the brakes.

I think the car mostly downshifts and I would guess doesn't active brake lights in those situations. It is so gentle I sometimes get lulled into following someone driving really slow.

The braking is usually aggressive when it does kick in.

Not sure either. I've never really tried my adaptive cruise control yet. I would assume it has to for safety reasons.

Pretty sure my 2016 GT brake lights were in use while ACC was activating the brakes. Test it at night.

Not sure about the Mustang, but my work truck, 2012 Freightliner Cascadia daycab has adaptive Cruise and when it slows down, the lights come on. You can really notice it at night coming down the hills, and the guy behind you tells you to quit riding the brakes, it blinding him.

They do. I can see mine at night clearly casting a red glow in the darkness behind me when it automatically brakes for slower vehicles in the non passing lane. Makes sense.
