The clutch situation for higher HP street cars is one of the more frustrating things for me. The basic wisdom is you go from a nice to drive ORGANIC 11in clutch to a PITA dual 9 11/16 cerametalic clutch (RXT or 9.5in Mantic). Then to add insult to injury, the regular RXT is not sprung hub which adds more NVH.

I have personally used custom sprung hub RST and RXT's in my 700+hp turbo SBF and while the RST drove great, it failed instantly at the track. The RXT lasted 10+ years and tons of abuse, but totally sucked for a street car IMHO.

Why not make a LARGER diameter sprung hub ORGANIC dual disc clutch. The Centerforce DYAD DS comes to mind. I have heard good and bad things about them. I also spoke to Monster Clutch; they don’t currently make a Coyote application and they don’t make sprung hub clutches.

What I am going to try and will install over the winter (I already have it) is the XClutch dual 10 1/2 sprung hub organic clutch.

I am hoping this will be the best of both worlds.

Because you can burn the RST up
How do you "burn" a clutch up exactly? Is it repeated pulls or launching a lot? Would doing a highway pull or a street launch once in a while without sticky tires still roast it?

Slip it too much with too much power

McLeod says it's not for "competition use"

I plan to be ~600 whp with an ESS G2 kit, when/if my clutch goes out what would be a good replacement? It's a daily driver and I never race it

RXT is a little weird to drive but it's alright. Guys seem to like Exedy. I'm don't have a lot of experience with the others though.

I share some of the same frustrations. I have a sprung hub RXT with my Magnum XL in my Whipple car and it can be finicky around town which gets annoying. At the track, it takes all the abuse and never complains. I know everything is a trade-off, but when/if this clutch ever needs replacing, I don’t think I’d put another one in the car. No idea what I’d replace it with though…

For a DD I'd go lpxhd. I work it hard on the street and it has no issues launchjng or power shifting in the 48k miles I've used it boosted. I've never taken it to the track though so who knows how it would hold up there.

I ran the LPXHD for a time and agree it is a very smooth clutch on the street. Only thing I did not like is that it was a solid hub. I did get quite a bit of 'gear rollover' from the transmission when at lower RPMs. But that is just the nature of solid hub setups I suppose. When I broke my MT82 I was running that clutch. 😁

My gear roll over was worse before I had it rebuilt. 1500rpm or less it was loud and I had a little chatter off the line but pretty minimal on that. I rebuilt it when my engine was out and the clutch still looked good easily could have run it a lot longer but glad I rebuilt it. No chatter now and the gear roll over is still there under 1500 but very quiet. The rebuild is cheap too for what you get. Half the clutch is just replaced with new parts.

Define gear rollover, please.

Sounds like a grinding noise at low rpm. Sprung hubs will dampen it so you can't hear it but with a solid hub it can be noticeable. I believe it has to go with the harmonics that are being transfered though but I'm sure you could google a better definition. I only learned about it after my initial install. Car drive and shifted great but I hear it while going slow and freaked out thinking I was going to have to pull the trans again. Honestly you almost have to be lugging the engine to hear it.

A good way to explain gear rollover is think about when you slow down to make a turn, you downshift and then accelerate from a lower RPM out of the turn. Gear rollover usually happens below 2000rpms, you'll hear this rattle / gear clashing / box of rocks sound resonate from the trans up through the shifter typically. As soon as the RPMs go up, it disappears.

With my original MT82, the gear rollover noise from the solid hub clutch setup was LOUD. Super obnoxious, but my stock trans seemed to have a lot of slop in it from the factory. Probably why it did not last long when boosted.

Ah, I hear it a lot when rolling below 10mph and in reverse. I had a friend scare me the other day when he heard it when I was in reverse. He said, "I heard a clicking grinding noise when you backed up!!"

I was all concerned and had him drive it in reverse while I listened. I said "THAT noise?" He said, "Yeah..." I was like, "Nah, that's normal for this clutch."

Thanks guys. I never heard that term associated with it.

If I boost and need a clutch I would go with Mantic. The only problem I have not seen many people here with it. You pay for a quality piece, I hate puck style or harsh clutches for a street car.
